‘The Crown’ Just Released the First Look at Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II
Olivia Colman will be replacing Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II on Netflix’s upcoming third season of The Crown, and on Monday, July 16, the show released the first photo of the actress in full costume and on set.
The photo, which depicts the queen wearing a pink suit and drinking a cup of tea, was accompanied by the simple caption “Patience” on The Crown‘s official Twitter account. While some of the show’s viewers responded to the first sneak peek with sadness that Foy would no longer be portraying the matriarch, many others reacted excitedly, with some even saying that Colman very closely resembled the queen.
It was also previously announced that Tobias Menzies, who recently starred in AMC’s The Terror but is best known for his role as Black Jack (and Frank) Randall on Outlander, would take over the role of Prince Philip from actor Matt Smith, who played Queen Elizabeth’s husband in the show’s first two seasons. Helena Bonham Carter was also announced as Princess Margaret.
The Crown found itself at the center of a pay gap controversy earlier this year, when producers revealed that Smith actually earned more than Foy — the “queen” — for his role on the show. Shortly after, however, producer Suzanna Mackie said that, moving forward, “no one gets paid more than the queen.”
The timeline for seasons 3 and 4 will cover the queen’s reign from 1964 to 1976. The Crown season 3 is expected to premiere on Netflix in 2019.
