When we last left the ladies of Litchfield, the standoff that saw the prisoners take control of the prison throughout season 5 came to a head when the prison was stormed and attacked by riot police.
Along with the premiere date announcement, Netflix’s “See What’s Next” account shared a brief but very grim teaser showing the charred interior of the women’s prison, as well as a prisoner transportation bus pulling away outside. Events of the season 5 finale lead us to assume that some of the resisting prisoners will be taken to “max” — or maximum security prison.
“This is a whole new world,” a voiceover that appears to be from lead character Piper can be heard saying.
The series has been veering into more serious territory over its past few seasons, taking its darkest turn yet in season 5. Set over just three days, the 13 episodes saw the inmates stage an uprising after the death of Poussey (Samira Wiley) at the hands of the guards. The women held the correctional officers and administration officials hostage, demanding justice for their friend, as well as reform and better treatment. While details about season 6 have not yet been made available, it’s likely we can expect much of the same unrest.
