Oscars 2018: The Award for Best Meme Goes to Jennifer Garner’s ‘Realization’ Face
The 2018 Oscars red carpet had its share of memorable political (and, of course, sartorial) moments, but it was inside LA’s Dolby Theatre, with a look of utter confusion from actress Jennifer Garner, that the breakout meme of the 90th Academy Awards was born.
At one point during the broadcast, the camera panned to Garner in the crowd, where she sat applauding with the rest of the audience. Then, her hands stopped mid-clap, and she seemed to have a private “a-ha” moment of sorts, causing a look of shock — or was it panic? — to wash across her face.
“What realization did Jennifer Garner just come to?” Jezebel writer and Who? Weekly podcast host Bobby Finger tweeted with a short video clip pinpointing the now-iconic moment.
So what *was* going through her mind? More than oneperson joked on Twitter that Garner suddenly remembered she forgot to take the chicken out of the freezer. Some suggested that maybe she left the iron on, or forgot to feed the fish. Regardless of what was racing through her mind at that exact moment, many found it not only hilarious, but super relatable. “Jennifer Garner is me every five seconds of life,” one Twitter user said, and honestly, same.
Garner was on hand to introduce musician Eddie Vedder as he performed a cover of the late Tom Petty’s “Room at the Top” during the show’s in memoriam montage. So far, she hasn’t commented on her widely memed moment, but if we’re lucky, we’ll get an Instagram story explaining what, exactly, was going through her mind.
