You only need to talk to me for 10 minutes to figure out that I am a huge movie gal. I love the movies themselves — getting lost in storylines, falling in love with characters, feeling inspired to go on adventures — but I also love the movie-watching experience. Cuddling with your closest friends, snacking on popcorn and mini M&Ms (my tried-and-true combo), and just being together is one of my favorite parts of a summer movie night.
Even though these summer days are drifting away (it wouldn't be a summer movie story without a Grease reference), it's never too late to make the most of the warm weather. Keep reading for the popcorn recipes, DIYs, and movie night essentials you need to throw the best outdoor movie extravaganza around.
Seating
DIY Seat Cushions
Make some comfy seating options available with these DIY cushions that are cute and comfy. The fabric is totally up to you so you can pick colors that match up with the movie or even go with themed patterns. (via Brit + Co)

DIY Outdoor Cushions
Make some lengthy cushions that are perfect for reclining on. This requires a little bit more elbow grease than the smaller cushions earlier, but they're definitely worth it. We'd recommend making enough to create a big pallet for all your guests to cuddle up together on. (via A Beautiful Mess)
Hand Knit the Coziest Hygge Blanket
When the sun sets and the weather gets a little cooler, there is nothing I love more than snuggling under a blanket. You can knit this DIY blanket for your next movie night, and the great thing is that since you're making it, it can be as big as you want it to be! (via Brit + Co)
Snack + Drinks
Crazy Popcorn
An all-out movie night calls for more than just plain butter on your popcorn. Make savory flavors like salt and vinegar or go all in on sweets with caramel cookie, peanut butter fudge, and Caribbean coconut. We'll take one of each, please. (via Brit + Co)
Caramel Cookie Popcorn
- Air pop enough popcorn for you and your friends
- Drizzle a good amount of caramel sauce and chocolate cookie crumbs over top
- Toss until the sauce is evenly distributed
- Pour the popcorn flat on a sheet of parchment paper so the popcorn doesn’t clump and wait for it to dry
- Enjoy!
Triscuit + Seared Ahi + Green Onions + Mustard Soy Sauce Bites
If you're having a movie night that's for the gals (we're talking chick flicks, wine, and fancy snacks), swap the popcorn for these tasty bites. Or just enjoy both. The combo of fish, green onions, and mustard soy sauce is enough to ensure there will be no leftovers. (via Brit + Co)
Charcuterie Cones
The great thing about these cones is that they're like having your own little box of snacks — you don't have to worry about someone not getting to eat or about spreading germs. Plus, you can customize them if anyone has any dietary restrictions (leave out the meat or swap the brie with dairy-free cheese), which makes them the *perfect* party food. (via Brit + Co)
Screen + Lights + Speakers
Gray 70'' x 82'' Portable Folding Frame Projector Screen ($120, was $130)
To make your movie night really memorable, go for a huge screen. It's especially great if you watch movies outdoors all the time.
Outdoor Bluetooth Speaker with Light ($100 for Two)
These babies are multipurpose and very helpful. Since they're both lights and speakers, you can hook them up to the movie for some extra volume or play some music beforehand.
Brightech Ambience Pro Outdoor String Lights ($58, was $67)
I'm always a fan of adding outdoor lighting to any and every scenario, and outdoor movie nights are no exception. You can hang these babies from the branches, snake them through your snack table, or wrap them around your porch railings.
Signs + Posters

Summer Movie Musts
If you're planning on throwing multiple movie nights throughout the summer, make a comprehensive (and colorful) reference of everything that's on your list. Not only will it look super cute during your movie night, but it'll look just as good framed on your wall once summer ends. (via Studio DIY)
DIY Letter Board
Make these letter boards to display your favorite quote, dynamic duo, or catchphrase from the movie. This DIY features a star shape, but since you're cutting the cardboard yourself, you can make them any shape that matches your movie. (via Brit + Co)
Pretty in Pink Minimalist Movie Poster ($25)
If you want to set your night up like a real movie theater, add a poster or two near the snack table. You can grab minimalist posters from Etsy and even order some miniature versions to serve as party favors.
