This Trendy Shade Was Just Named Color of the Year for 2019
As self-confessed color addicts, we’re always looking for the next big color craze. According to paint brand PPG, the hue to watch for in 2019 is a dark-but-pigmented jewel tone-esque shade called Night Watch. Reminiscent of something you’d find on lush tropical foliage like those trendy rubber trees, the leafy green will certainly seem familiar to the plant-lovers among us.
“The dark green hue allows homeowners to emulate that feeling of lush greenery and the healing power of nature in their spaces,” PPG color expert Dee Schlotter tells us. “This year, a desire to be more closely connected with nature was a reccurring theme across all industry segments and countries.” Schlotter points to our busy, tech-oriented society as a possible reason for the shift: “Empty space in our lives, such as downtime waiting for a bus or lulls in conversation, tends to be filled with the use of our smartphones,” she says. “Being surrounded by Night Watch can give some of that empty space back by pulling our memories of natural environments to the surface, to recreate the calming, invigorating euphoria we feel when in nature.”
While it carries the classic clout of all jewel tones, there’s something about this shade of green that still feels unexpected. It’s versatile and can be paired with a number of styles, from modern and mid-century to more traditional, but it still packs a punch. Plus, we love how it looks paired with high-polished brass and other metallic accents for a glam feel.
