Here’s What Troian Bellisario Has to Say About That “Pretty Little Liars” Series Finale Backlash
The Pretty Little Liars finale may have finally revealed the identity of AD (did YOU guess?), but plenty of fans were NOT happy with the way the series shook out onscreen. Emotional as everyone was (cast included!), many — including our own readers, based on comment reactions — felt that there were too many plot holes left to be filled by the show’s end, and that it didn’t offer up enough bang for their buck.
One of its stars, Troian Bellisario, who played Spencer Hastings and [SPOILER ALERT!] Alex (AKA AD), is now speaking out about the brutal backlash sparked by the PPL goodbye.
“You can’t satisfy everybody,” she told TVLine. The actress went on to say that the wildly negative reactions to the show’s end have been so overwhelming, she’s had to “consciously remove [her]self from looking at people’s responses.”
“As wonderful as it is when you get messages from people saying how much they like your performance, all you have to do is see that one person who’s like ‘This is stupid, I hate you,’ and it’s gut-wrenching.”
She also pointed out the fact that her character’s actions shouldn’t be held against her personally. “Like, this is a story our creator [I. Marlene King] came up with, and it’s my job to tell that story to the best of my abilities. So, when someone says you were horrible, it’s hard not to take that in.” We feel for you, BB.
We can’t even come close to imagining how intense fan reactions can be when you’re a part of a show as popular as Pretty Little Liars.
Still, hopefully we can all take a tip or two from Bellisario herself in stepping back from time to time and tuning out the shade.
