You’ve Been Putting Your Hair in a Bun Wrong This Whole Time
Ahh, the messy bun. It’s a style that just about every girl has done with her hair since she can remember. It’s quick, it’s easy and it’s pretty — that is, until the elastic starts to sag. Trust me: there is a better, just-as-effortless way to whip up your hair with staying power, and it’s as simple as stepping away from the elastic! Grab a teasing comb and a handful of bobby pins and read below for the *right* way to put your hair up into a bun.
Now let’s get started. One word of caution though — you’ll be attracting loads of admirers.
Here’s one — he’s so cute, we can’t stand it!
STEP 1: PULL YOUR HAIR INTO A MEDIUM PONYTAIL
Gather your hair into a mid-height ponytail (you want the end pony to fall somewhere between topknot and low bun territory) and loosely cinch it with a small elastic — one that wouldn’t work if you tried to stretch it out to tie up your bun. Create texture and height by roughing up the crown with the pointy side of a teasing brush. Move the brush upwards and from side to side to create volume and separation.
STEP 2: TWIST UP A BUN
You know what to do — grab it, twist it, tuck it. Now grab your bobby pins to pin the bun in place. Don’t worry about loose pieces… your bun shouldn’t be perfect.
STEP 3: SPRAY IN PLACE
Spray your bun in place and play up any flyaways — they’re welcome here! The overall look needs to be effortless and LOOK effortless.
And it is! Done in five minutes flat with the messy bun of your dreams.
