Everything Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Have Said About Having Kids
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle revealed to the world on Monday, October 15, that they're expecting their first child together, less than one year after first getting engaged and five months following their royal wedding. The couple have been eager to start a family for a while; in the time prior to and since their engagement, both have spoken separately and together about their desire to have kids. May 2012: In an interview with Katie Couric, Prince Harry said that he had wanted kids of his own for almost as long as he could remember. "I've longed for kids since I was very, very young," he said, just 27 years old at the time. "And so, I'm waiting to find the right person, someone who's willing to take on the job." May 2015: After the birth of his niece, Princess Charlotte, in 2015, Harry expressed his own excitement at having kids someday in an interview with Sky News. "Of course, I would love to have kids right now, but there is a process that one has to go through," he said. "It would be great to have someone else next to me, but the time will come. Whatever happens, happens." (Photo via Ben Stansall/WPA Pool/Getty Images)
September 2015: Markle spoke of her desire to have kids — and a daughter, specifically — back in 2015. "I've always coveted the Cartier French Tank watch," she told Hello! at the time. "When I found out Suits had been picked up for our third season — which, at the time, felt like such a milestone — I totally splurged and bought the two-tone version. I had it engraved on the back, 'To M.M. From M.M.' and I plan to give it to my daughter one day. That's what makes pieces special, the connection you have to them." March 2016: Speaking with Good Morning America in 2016, Prince Harry said that he imagines his mother, the late Princess Diana, would be happy to have him give her more grandchildren. "I hope she's looking down, you know, with tears in her eyes, being incredibly proud of what we've established, I suppose," Harry said at the time. "I'm sure she's longing for me to have kids so she can be a grandmother again. … I can't wait for the day...it will be fantastic. I've got a kid inside of me. I want to keep that. I adore kids. I enjoy everything that they bring to the party. They just say what they think." (Photo via Aaron Chown/WPA Pool/Getty Images)
May 2016: In the May 2016 edition of Best Health magazine, Markle said having a family was a bucket list item. "I want to travel more and I can't wait to start a family," she said. "But in due time." (Photo via Steve Parsons/WPA Pool/Getty Images)
November 2017: Shortly after news of the engagement broke, the couple gave their first joint interview, in which the topic of having children came up. "I think, you know, one step at a time, and hopefully we'll start a family in the near future," Harry said at the time, as Markle smiled beside him. (Photo via Chris Jackson/Getty Images)
March 2018: Ahead of the couple's royal wedding, Markle dropped what many believed to be a major royal baby hint during a trip to Northern Ireland. While meeting with a husband and wife who make hypoallergenic baby products, she said, "I'm sure at some point we'll need the whole thing." July 2018: During the royal couple's recent visit to Dublin, Prince Harry spoke about the possibility of a big family. October 2018: Harry expressed his desire to have a daughter in a video taken by a member of the public who greeted the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at the Invictus Games in Sydney in October.
