It seems like a lifetime ago that we learned Prince Harry was dating American actress Meghan Markle. And now they're engaged to be married. The couple tend to stay fairly mum when it comes to their relationship, but they have shared a few gems about each other and their relationship. Here are 15 of their sweetest quotes. Prince Harry was the first to acknowledge the relationship when he released a statement criticizing the "racial undertones" of press coverage of Markle in November 2016. But the now-former actress was the first to open up about their life together.
"I can tell you that at the end of the day I think it's really simple. We're two people who are really happy and in love. We were very quietly dating for about six months before it became news, and I was working during that whole time, and the only thing that changed was people's perception," she told Vanity Fair in September 2017. "Nothing about me changed. I'm still the same person that I am, and I've never defined myself by my relationship." (Photo via Chris Jackson/Getty Images for the Invictus Games Foundation)
At the time of the Vanity Fair interview, the couple had not yet stepped out publicly together, and Markle said they were in no rush. "We're in love. I'm sure there will be a time when we will have to come forward and present ourselves and have stories to tell, but I hope what people will understand is that this is our time," she explained to the mag. "This is for us. It's part of what makes it so special, that it's just ours. But we're happy. Personally, I love a great love story." (Photo via Dan Kitwood/Getty Images)
Their great love story began in July 2016, when they were set up on a blind date by a mutual friend. "I didn't know much about him, and so the only thing that I had asked her when she said she wanted to set us up was — I had one question, I said, 'Well, is he nice?' Because if he wasn't kind, it just didn't seem like it would make sense," Markle told the BBC in the couple's first official sit-down interview after their engagement. "So we went and met for a drink and then, I think, very quickly into that, we said, 'Well, what are we doing tomorrow? We should meet again.'" (Photo via Ian Vogler/WPA Pool/Getty Images)
Prior to that first meeting, Prince Harry had never seen or heard of Markle. "I was beautifully surprised when I walked into that room and saw her," he told the BBC. "I thought, 'I'm really gonna have to up my game, sit down, and make sure I've got good chat.'" (Photo via Chris Jackson/Getty Images)
Obviously, they hit if off. Markle, who is an activist as well as an actress, said they bonded over their similar philanthropic passions. Both she and Prince Harry support various causes including women's rights, HIV-AIDS awareness, and mental health.
"It was really one of the first things we connected on. It was one of the first things we started talking about when we met — just the different things that we wanted to do in the world and how passionate we were about seeing change," she told the BBC. "I think that's what got date two in the books, probably." (Photo via Ben Birchall/WPA Pool/Getty Images)
Date two happened pretty quickly after date one. "We had two dates in London last July, and it was, I think, about three, maybe four weeks later that I managed to persuade her to come and join me in Botswana, and we camped out with each other under the stars," Prince Harry said of their earliest days together. "She came and joined me for five days out there, which was absolutely fantastic." (Photo via Andrew Milligan/WPA Pool/Getty Images)
A year-and-a-half later, Prince Harry proposed. "I don't think that I would call it a whirlwind in terms of our relationship. … I think we were able to really have so much time just to connect and we never went longer than two weeks without seeing each other, even though we were obviously doing a long-distance relationship," Markle told the BBC. "So it's — we made it work." (Photo via Chris Jackson/Getty Images)
For Prince Harry, it felt like fate. "The fact that I fell in love with Meghan so incredibly quickly was sort of confirmation to me that all of the stars were aligned, everything was just perfect," he said in their joint interview. "This beautiful woman just literally tripped and fell into my life, I fell into her life." (Photo via Chris Jackson/WPA Pool/Getty Images)
Harry wasn't the only one who was smitten. Apparently Queen Elizabeth II's beloved dogs adored her, too. "The corgis took to [her] straight away," the prince joked to the BBC. "I spent the last 33 years being barked at; this one walks in, absolutely nothing!" (Photo via Chris Jackson/Getty Images)
Prince Harry proposed in early November 2017, while the couple were cozied up at his London home one night, "trying" to roast a chicken. "It was just an amazing surprise, so sweet and natural and very romantic," Markle gushed to the BBC, adding that he got down on one knee. She said she was so excited that she "could barely let [him] finish proposing" to her. "I was like, ‘Can I say yes now?'" (Photo via Chris Jackson/Getty Images)
After they announced their plans to marry, Markle began the transition into royal life. In December, she undertook her first official engagement with her fiancé, and in the months following, she attended events with the Queen, Prince William, and Duchess Kate Middleton, too.
"The fact that she'll be really, unbelievably good at the job part of it as well is obviously a huge relief to me, because she'll be able to deal with everything else that comes with it," Harry told the BBC. So, not only does Prince Harry thank his lucky stars that he met Markle, but he also values and appreciates her abilities as someone thrust into the most famous family in the world.
"I know that at the end of the day, she chooses me and I choose her. Whatever we have to tackle together or individually will always be us together as a team. She's capable of anything," he gushed. (Photo via Chris Jackson/Getty Images)
Working as a team is very important to both of them, especially when it comes to the charities they patronize. The couple hope to do a lot of good both in the UK and around the globe, and have even asked for charitable donations in lieu of wedding gifts.
"There's a hell of a lot of stuff and work that needs doing. At the moment, for us, it's going to be making sure that our relationship is always put first," Prince Harry told the BBC. "But both of us have passions for wanting to make change, change for good." (Photo via Geoff Pugh/WPA Pool/Getty Images)
Asked what his late mother, Princess Diana, would have thought of Markle, Harry didn't hesitate. "They'd be thick as thieves, without question," he told the BBC. "And she would be over the moon, jumping up and down, so excited for me." (Photo via Niall Carson/Pool/Getty Images)
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will say "I do" at St. George's Chapel on May 19 — but if he'd had his way, the wedding might have been months ago.
Asked during their first post-engagement photo op when he knew he wanted to marry her, he told reporters, "When did I know she was the one? The very first time we met."
