If you go down the Google rabbit hole, you’ll find a hundred sites that tell you that one certain shade of red is best for you. Then you’ll find another hundred sites that totally contradict that. And now you’re back to having no idea how to pick out that perfect hue.
Instead of giving you our official guide on what shade goes with what skin tone, hair color, or eye color, we decided to show you four great shades on four different gals. After all, there are too many factors at play when settling on “The” red for you. Take a look at each of these beauties wearing the same four lip-shades, then decide for yourself what works best for you.

MAC Ruby Woo A83
: As a stylist, this is my go-to for pretty much everyone. It has a good balance of cool and warm tones, and hits the hue right in the middle. It is 100 percent matte, won’t rub off, and tends to look different on everyone.
Makeup Forever Rouge Artist Intense Satin Brownish Red 44
($20): This long lasting option is much earthier, with brown undertones. The extreme pigmentation allows for one-stroke coverage, meaning you can apply and be ready to go in a matter of seconds. NARS Semi Matte Jungle Red 1011
: Finally, we’ve got a heavy hitter from NARS. This lipstick is semi matte, highly pigmented and non-drying so you won’t have to deal with crackly post-lipstick lips. The undertone here is blue.
Finally, it’s pretty amazing just how different this looks on each woman. Going clockwise from the top left, it goes from a little coral to pretty in pink to deep crimson to a glossy magenta-inspired hue.
