How to Turn 1 Maxi Skirt into 4 DIY Costumes
Always wanted to learn how to sew, but still haven’t found the time? Well, we’ve got a one-hour e-class for that, yo! And one of the projects that you make in said class happens to be the perfect base for not one, not two, but FOUR easy-as-pie DIY Halloween costumes.
Once you’ve created your red maxi skirt via our class, simply add a few key accessories to transform yourself into Carmen Sandiego, Little Red Riding Hood and Jessica Rabbit. And if you feel like learning to sew with a friend, grab your bestie and turn yourselves into Thing 1 and Thing 2! Special props to our style guru Misty Spinney for bringing each of these costumes to life.
Before we get to the costumes, a little more about Sewing 101: Taught by resident Brit + Co DIY expert Roxy Taghavian, this class will teach you the basics of sewing. The class starts by walking you through the pros and cons of different fabric types. From there, discover some of the most creative places we know to buy colorful fabrics and the right tools. Finally, you’ll learn to sew three different projects. Learn to make a cloth napkin, a pillowcase and a chic maxi skirt.
CARMEN SANDIEGO
Now, costume time! You know we love us a bit of nostalgia. In fact, all of the costumes on this list bring us back to the ’80s and ’90s. Surprise, surprise ;) Let’s get to it.
What you need:
– red hat with a yellow ribbon or belt around it
– red trench
– red dress
– black leggings or skinny jeans
– black knee-high boots
This intercontinental style icon will always be relevant. To create the look, it’s all about making sure you’ve got a few key elements (like that red hat with yellow trim!) covered. Turn your maxi skirt into a strapless mini-dress by rolling it up at the top. If you want a little more shape, you can also add a belt at the waist. Once you’ve got yourself outfitted, you obviously need to find a bunch of dudes to dress up as Rockapella.
THING 1 + THING 2
What you need:
– two red maxi skirts
– two blue clown wigs
– Thing 1 and Thing 2 signs (download here)
– matching sneaks
You know what they say about friends who make things together? They totally stay besties for life. For this costume hack, pull those skirts on up and turn them into dresses. Print out Thing 1 and Thing 2 signs and stick ’em right on your chests. Top the look off with a crazy blue wig and you’re good to go.
LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD
What you need:
– red cape
– white peasant blouse
– black corset-style belt
– white lace trim apron
– red maxi skirt
– black boots
– basket
Let’s bring it wayyyy back to stories from when we were itty bitty. The great thing about this costume is that you can go super simple and simply wear a skirt, white tee and red hoodie, or you can take it to the next level like we did. Now, what’s in that basket?! ;)
JESSICA RABBIT
