Planning to bake a delicious treat for your mom this Mother’s Day? Crepe paper roses and rosewater buttercream frosting are the perfect partners in crime when it comes to giving your basic cupcake a serious upgrade. Cluster the roses together and you have an adorable bouquet that’s sure to make your mom smile!
Crepe Paper Rose Dessert Toppers: We’ll start with how to make sweet and lovely dessert toppers, perfect for any spring or summer brunch.
Materials:
– sheets of crepe paper or streamers
– toothpicks
– hot glue gun
– flower hole punch of mini cookie cutters to trace
For stencils, we used cookie cutters. Just make sure to wash them really well after you use them!
First trace or punch out three flowers on crepe paper color of your choice. You can stick with traditional colors like pinks & reds or have fun with blues and oranges. If you’re making these for Mother’s Day, go with your mom’s favorite colors.
Once the three little flowers are cut out, soften their edges with a pencil. Slide the first flower onto the toothpick and secure it with a drop of glue.
Take two petals on opposite sides and glue the edges together. If you’re having trouble shaping the rose, cut a little slit in between the petals. Then glue a third petal and form the rose bud center. Glue the remaining two petals to form a complete bud.
Take the second flower cutout, poke a hole in the center and slide onto the toothpick. Begin folding and gluing petals in the same fashion, creating a fuller rose bud. Once all the petals are attached, slide on the third flower cutout. Continue to fold and attach the petals until all are secured.
If you’d like a larger flower, continue to add flower cutouts and build and full rose. When all the petals are attached, cut out a small flower in green. Slide onto the toothpick and glue to the base of the rosebud.
Trace or draw a leaf on the green crepe paper or streamer and cut out. Roll the bottom of the leaf around the toothpick and glue.
Now, about that frosting!
Rosewater Buttercream Frosting: This simple buttercream recipe is delicious and fragrant. It is perfect for cupcakes, a full-size cake, or filling French macarons.
Ingredients (makes enough for a dozen cupcakes):
– 1 stick of unsalted butter, softened
– 1 1/2 cups of powdered sugar, sifted
– 1/2 teaspoon of rose water
– optional: a tiny drop of pink food coloring
Beat the butter with a hand or stand mixer until light and fluffy. Slowly add in the powdered sugar on medium speed until smooth. Add in the rose water and food coloring until desired color is reached. The rose water is quite strong. Adding too much will make the frosting taste a little like perfume.
Any mom would be happy to receive a fresh batch of cupcakes with rose frosting and crepe paper roses. Have full sheets of crepe paper? Follow the same steps above to create larger roses!
Present these darling cupcakes on Mother’s Day with a bouquet of flowers and a pretty wrapped gift. Your mom will be so pleased!
