Ryan Gosling Says He Got a “Mild Concussion” While Filming ‘First Man’
Since first getting a glimpse of Ryan Gosling with a fresh buzz cut on the set of First Man back in December, we’ve been waiting on pins and needles to see the 37-year-old’s portrayal of legendary astronaut Neil Armstrong. Now, the wait is (finally!) over thanks to the very first trailer for the upcoming flick.
Directed by none other than Best Director Oscar winner Damien Chazelle (La La Land), the flick also stars The Crown‘s Claire Foy as wife Janet Armstrong as well as Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights) and Pablo Schreiber (Orange Is the New Black) as Armstrong’s fellow NASA astronauts.
The action-packed clip, which clocks in at 2 minutes and 30 seconds, sees Gosling donning a NASA uniform as he undergoes intense mission prep for his 1969 Apollo 11 moon landing.that appears to include getting blown out of a rocket. We also see his character in more private, tender moments with his young sons and wife, as they struggle to wrap their minds around the idea of Armstrong going into space. “There are risks, but we have every intention of coming back,” he assures them.
As it turns out, filming had its own perils: Gosling told Jimmy Kimmel that he actually received a minor concussion after spending six to eight hours in a “multi-access trainer” that was built to help astronauts train for emergencies in space. “It’s this thing that kind of sends you like, NASA teakettle… they would only do it for maybe 20 minutes at a time or something… I started to sort of smell a rat up here,” he said, pointing to his head. “That, and getting banged around in the capsules, hitting my head.”
When Kimmel pressed for more, he revealed that wife Eva Mendes actually advised him to go to the doctor after he shared his idea “that there were people in donut stores all around the world trying to charm their way into getting free donuts.” Yikes!
An official release date is yet to be set, but we, for one, can’t wait!
