Sarah Hyland Says Her “Modern Family” Character Is Bisexual
Modern Family actress Sarah Hyland’s love life has been the subject of much scrutiny lately, both in real life and onscreen. After sparking major relationship buzz of her own with former Bachelorette contestant Wells Adams, the Candies creative director has dropped a bombshell about her longtime character, Haley Dunphy: She’s bisexual!
The announcement came after a fan of the show tweeted out her theory about Haley’s sexual orientation. “Haley Dunphy is bisexual! #oneofus #oneofus” her Tweet read, with a second seeking confirmation from the star herself.

Hyland, 26, did just that, giving fans a response that had them over the moon, regardless of their own sexual orientation.

“I don’t know what the writers would say? But I confirm,” the actress wrote.
Haley Dunphy’s love life has been a regular feature of the show, with, by AOL’s count, the character having had nine boyfriends over the course of the show’s eight-year history. Although she’s yet to have a girlfriend, maybe the tides will change next season for the less-than-genius eldest Dunphy daughter?
She’d certainly be in good company, thanks to a growing list of gay and bisexual TV characters, including her own TV uncles, Pam and Lafayette on True Blood, Kevin on Riverdale, and Luisa on Jane the Virgin.
While the series’ writers have yet to respond, we hardly doubt they’d mind, particularly since fans are seemingly overjoyed, writing sweet messages of, “thank you, this made my day,” to giant rainbow hearts.
