If You Buy One Pair of Shoes This Summer, Make It These Waterproof Espadrilles
If you feel too old to wear water shoes and too stylish for the average pair of flip-flops, look no further than Sea Star Beachwear for your go-to summer footwear. Using a mix of techy fabric innovation and sophisticated styling, this ingenious label has created shoes you can wear from the beach to town and back again.
Launched in 2014, Sea Star is the brainchild of Libby Fitzgerald, formerly of Hermès, and Michael Leva, former creative director of C. Wonder. The two set out to create shoes that could be worn in the water but looked good enough to wear to lunch, on a boat, or anywhere that called for more fashionable footwear. Together, they re-imagined traditional espadrilles, the quintessential stylish beach shoe, crafting them out of quick-drying neoprene, with a rope pattern molded into the rubber sole. And just like that, Fitzgerald and Leva changed the summer shoe game forever.
The label started out with the Beachcomber Espadrille, a classic style available in solids, prints, and laser-cut “eyelet.” These days, the brand’s offering has expanded to include the Seafarer Slingback ($96), a kids’ collection available at J.Crew, and a collaboration with textile master John Robshaw.
Needless to say, you’re going to want to stock up on these double-duty wonders for the summer. So go ahead and, as the folks at Sea Star like to put it, “Get your feet wet.”
