Shailene Woodley, Nominated for a 2017 Emmy, Doesn’t Own a TV
Shailene Woodley isn’t tuned in to her competition at the 2017 Emmys, because even though she’s on TV, she doesn’t actually watch TV. The actress — who’s nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series for her work on HBO’s Big Little Lies — told E! News on the Emmys red carpet at LA’s Microsoft Theater that she hasn’t owned a TV since she was 18 years old.
“I technically don’t have a home anywhere, so I suppose there’s no TV to put in that home. But I haven’t had a TV since I moved out of my parents’ house at 18,” she explained.
And even if she did own a TV, she probably wouldn’t use it. “All my friends who watch TV, I always just ask them when they have time to. When do people have time to?” she said “I’m a reader, so I always read a book instead of turning on my TV.”
Woodley’s lack of a television shouldn’t come as a huge surprise, as she’s said in the past that she’s not a “big technology person.” For a while in 2014, she didn’t even own a cellphone — though she eventually had to get one for work. “We’ve been doing so much press and they were like, ‘Shai, we need to be able to get ahold of you, so here’s a temporary phone and we’ve taped the number to the back of it so you won’t forget it,'” she told Jimmy Kimmel in May of that year. “It’s kind of hilarious.”
She also said at the time that she could fit almost all of her belongings into one suitcase. “I was only home for 15 days last year and I got home and I was like, ‘I don’t want to be alone. I want to be with my friends and family,'” she said. “So, I got rid of everything just so I could have one suitcase that would be easy to transport between houses and just kind of couch surf for a few months. But it’s so refreshing and it takes so much stress away when you’re like, ‘Ugh, I only have one pair of jeans to wash.’ It’s so nice.”
