Shannen Doherty Sounds Off on the ‘Charmed’ Reboot’s ‘Offensive’ Description
When news dropped last week that a Charmed reboot was in the works from The CW, OG star Holly Marie Combs was not impressed — and she made her feelings very well known. Now, another one of the original Halliwell sisters, Shannen Doherty, is weighing in with her own thoughts.
The Beverly Hills, 90210 alum starred as Prue Halliwell on the popular series, which ran from 1998 to 2006 (although Doherty left in 2001). And to her credit, she’s really trying to see the positive side of what has become a touchy situation. “I’m intrigued by the idea that a new generation might be comforted, inspired like all you were,” she tweeted to fans. “Charmed helped us all in some way.”

When one person praised her for still being “invested in the legacy this show helped create,” she replied, “I love Charmed. I also want it to be respected. I’m simply choosing to be constructive about it because negativity has no place in my life.”
Thank you. I love charmed. I also want it to be respected. I’m simply choosing to be constructive about it because negativity has no place in my life.

Doherty previously revealed in 2015 that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer, for which she underwent a single mastectomy and multiple chemotherapy treatments. Years later, it sounds like she’s doing her best to keep her priorities straight and the negativity away.
However, she did take issue with the reboot’s description as an updated version of the story that is now “fierce, funny, [and] feminist.” Most people would argue that the original was all three of those things. “Their wording is terrible and a bit offensive,” she tweeted to one fan. “But, everyone makes mistakes. Perhaps with the backlash, they will be more thoughtful in future.”
Yep. You nailed it. Their wording is terrible and a bit offensive. But, everyone makes mistakes. Perhaps with the backlash they will be more thoughtful in future.

When another follower further questioned the “feminist” adjective, she replied that it was a “very ignorant stupid comment” and speculated that perhaps the description was written by someone who has “never watched the show and just read a synopsis on it.”
Yes I addressed this…. very ignorant stupid comment. Perhaps made by a millennial that never watched the show and just read a synopsis on it.

She also admitted that if the reboot decides to copy certain aspects of the first show (such as the character names and stories), “it will rub me the wrong way too.”

We’ll just have to wait to see if the people in charge of the reboot take these issues into consideration.
