This Designer’s Spring Campaign Might Be the Most Diverse Ever
Sophie Theallet’s been busy making statements lately. First, the French designer announced that she wouldn’t dress Melania Trump. Now, you won’t see the fashion designer’s Spring 2017 collection on the runway this New York Fashion Week, or at all rather. This season, Sophie is opting out of NYFW to focus on spreading a message of diversity with her latest campaign.
“World Citizen” is divided into two parts: one series photographed by Henry Leutwyler and the second photographed by Sophie’s longtime collaborator Tiziano Magni. Sophie directed and styled both shoots with the help of Steve Francoeur, the CEO and President of Sophie Theallet.
“The cast is people I love; they are friends to the house of Sophie Theallet and they are people who wear my clothes all the time,” said Sophie. “But more than that, they represent a diversity of every woman, every color. This is life. This is the world that we live in.”
To illustrate that diverse beauty, Sophie enlisted a cast of 13 friends to the brand who wear her clothing: Neve Campbell, Rossy de Palma, Blanca Li, Gretchen Mol, Drena de Niro, Corinne Bailey Rae, Sarita Choudhury, Chynna Rogers, Candice Huffine, Shirleen Allicot, Adesuwa Aighewi, Adepero Oduye and Selah Marley.
“The most important thing for me is to concentrate on spreading my message, to show diversity,” she said. “That’s why my campaign is called World Citizen, because you see all types of beauty in every woman. It’s very human. That’s where I stand.”
Well said, Sophie!
