Now Your Phone Can Cook Sous Vide
Picture this: You go up to your friend and ask her for $100,000, and then she gives you $1,811,321 instead. That’s pretty much what happened earlier this summer when Anova Culinary campaigned on Kickstarter to raise funds for their sous vide Precision Cooker — a sous vide system that’s controlled right from your phone. Needless to say, this is one crowdfunded cooking machine that we can’t wait to get our (oven) mitts on.
If you’re not familiar with sous vide, it is a style of cooking that’s widely used by chef’s use to prepare perfectly “done” dishes day in and day out. Sous vide technically means “under vacuum,” which is a reference to vacuum sealing food and putting it into a temperature-controlled water bath. However, sous vide isn’t limited to vacuum sealing techniques — it’s really all about monitoring and maintaining those precise temperatures.
At-home sous vide devices have seen a huge rise in popularity in recent years as the technology has become more affordable, but Anova thought they’d do things a little differently. They’ve connected their device to your device via bluetooth, giving you a simple and comparatively affordable way to keep tabs on your dinner from your phone or tablet.
In the complementary app, you can scroll through and find your desired food. Say you’re cooking a chicken breast. You simply find the chicken breast setting, and the app takes it from there, prepping it flawlessly and deliciously every time. You can also pre-program your recipes, which we love because we have a lot of pins that need cookin’!
Have you tried the sous vide method at home? How did it work out for you!
