Besides gazing at all the red carpet beauty and fashion, filling out ballots + winning the party prediction pool is our next fave thing about awards season. While we’ve been getting our ears and eyes ready for all the performances happening at this weekend’s Grammy Awards, Spotify has been busy working on its predictions for the ceremony. Way to ruin our game, Spotify… now we’re about fourfiveseconds from wildin’.
The music streaming service used an algorithm to predict some of the major category winners of music’s biggest night. While not scientific, since Spotify users aren’t actually the ones voting on the golden gramophone, it is a fun way to forecast who may be making an acceptance speech come Sunday. Spotify compiled global data on the top streamed songs, albums and artists nominated in the Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist categories. They also analyzed the listening habits of the 60 million Spotify users to find the most viral songs, albums and artists in each category to predict what they call “dark horse” winners. So basically, Spotify is playing it safe and predicting two winners per category. We see you, Spotify, we see you ;)
Noticeably absent from any victories is Taylor Swift, for obvious reasons. #ComeBackTaylor
Record of the Year
Sia’s “Chandelier”actually won this category 100% as the booming song was the most streamed and most viral. Snaps to you girl, but we’ve really only got one question: How will Sia hide her face when accepting her Grammy?
1. “Chandelier” – Sia
2. “Stay With Me” – Sam Smith
3. “Fancy” – Iggy Azalea feat. Charli XCX
4. “All About That Bass” – Meghan Trainor
5. “Shake It Off” – Taylor Swift
Album of the Year
While Ed Sheeran’s X was the most streamed album on Spotify (we’re guilty of playing it on a never-ending loop), Pharrell Williams is predicted as the “dark horse” winner. Watch your back, Ed.
1. Ed Sheeran – X
2. Sam Smith – In The Lonely Hour
3. Pharrell Williams – G I R L
4. Beyoncé – Beyoncé
5. Beck – Morning Phase
Song of the Year
Once again Sia’s “Chandelier”was the most streamed, but she isn’t sweeping this category on Spotify, as Hozier’s “Take Me To Church”has been much more viral. We’re guessing it’s because you can’t watch videos on Spotify — that “Chandelier”video is everything.
1. “Chandelier” – Sia
2. “Stay With Me” – Sam Smith
3. “All About That Bass” – Meghan Trainor
4. “Take Me To Church” – Hozier
5. “Shake It Off” – Taylor Swift
Best New Artist
We’re fans of Bastille and glad he is the “dark horse” prediction, but how can the Grammy not go to Sam Smith for Best New Artist with the year he’s had? And those pipes. Take us to church, Sam!
1. Sam Smith
2. Iggy Azalea
3. Bastille
4. HAIM
5. Brandy Clark
