19 Next-Level Ponytails That Are Lazy Girl-Approved
Ponytails are often reserved for lazy hair days or a trip to the gym, but that doesn’t always have to be the case. While a bombshell blowout would definitely look amazing at your next black tie event, a ponytail could look just as good. Think we’re crazy? Think again! With award show season wrapping up and another fashion week under our belts, we’ve spotted a handful of celebs and models who looked ultra elegant with swept-back hair. So ditch the blowdryer and grab a rubber band, because after taking a glance at these 19 looks, you’re going to be rethinking your next updo.
1. Ariana Grande: What other hairstyle would you expect from Ariana? If you’re looking for something that’s flirty, fun and fully out of your face, try a slicked back, high pony like the pop star’s trademark ‘do. (Photo via Jason Merritt/Getty)
2. Side Twist: The pretty messy ponys at Nicholas K are just the right amount of everyday undone. The detailing is made especially obvious when paired with two-toned hair. We took on the trend and recreated the runway pony in five minutes flat. (Photo via Fernanda Calfat/Getty and Brit + Co)
3. Kerry Washington: Loose, low and super laid back, we’re loving this tame pony Kerry wore to the Producer’s Guild Awards. Sport this if you have long hair or limited layers. (Photos via Kevin Winter/Frederick M. Brown/Getty)
4. Clip Flip: For a style with a sort of origami flair, check our tutorial that takes on the funky hair flip, which popped up on the runway over at Suno. The style is unique, yet still totally first date-approved. (Photo via Mireya Acierto/Getty and Brit + Co)
5. Keltie Knight: The TV presenter’s long ponytail caught our eye with its segmented styling and hyper-teased finish. Here’s an option if you want a pony that’s anything but ordinary. (Photo via Jason Merritt/Getty)
6. Amy Adams: If you’re looking for a high ponytail that’s a little fancier than Ariana’s, try Amy Adams’ ’50s inspired pony, which is curled at the ends to add a quick touch of elegance. (Photo via Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty)
7. French Twist Pony: Over at Hervé Léger, models sported an Edwardian-inspired French twist. We took the look in a more romantic direction and gave the twisted pony a fun, flirty edge. (Photos via Fernanda Calfat/Getty and Brit + Co)
8.Emma Stone: Oh, Emma Stone. How do you always manage to look so amazing? Rocking a menswear-inspired blazer, Emma kept the look fluid by pulling back those ronze-colored locks into a low pony. If your hair is on the shorter side, a low pony is a great way to make sure nothing comes falling out. (Photo via Ethan Miller/Getty)
9. Half Done Ponytail: Give this ’90s style a fashion update by slicking your hair back and covering the elastic with hair to create a clean, modern look. (Photo via Fernanda Calfat/Getty)
10. Felicity Jones: Think that half pony wouldn’t translate into the real world? Well Oscar nominee Felicity Jones just might prove you wrong. Even on the red carpet this style looks classic in front and trendy in back. (Photo via Ethan Miller/Getty)
11. Chrissy Teigen: Chrissy’s Golden Globes hair is proof that you don’t have to wear your hair down to rock easygoing beach waves. The ultra-high placement of the pony puts her wavy tresses in the spotlight from just about any angle. (Photo via Jason Merritt/Getty)
12. Posh Twisted Pony: Spotted at the Victoria Beckham show, this sculptural ponytail is posh in more ways than one. Offering trendy, slicked back hair in front and fun shaping in back, this is definitely our new go-to style for fall (or if we’re being honest, probably spring). 13. Reese Witherspoon: To make your pony look extra fancy, copy Reese’s style by leaving a small section of hair out of the ponytail, then wrapping it around the base of the pony to cover up the elastic. (Photo via Ethan Miller/Frazer Harrison/Getty)
14. Lorde: She might be the youngest of the bunch, but the singer’s hairstyle is arguably the most mature. If you’re sporting long locks, make a big impact by keeping things slick and low and incorporating an accent in the back like Lorde’s extra-thick hair tie. (Photo via Frazer Harrison/Getty)
15. Rashida Jones: With the perfect mix of messy and chic, Rashida Jones totally masters the fancy ponytail at this year’s SAG Awards. Her ends are softly curled, adding an air of elegance, while things are kept relatively low-key up front with full bangs and just the right amount of perfectly placed flyaways. 16. Headband Pony: The prep school-inspired hair at Richard Chai made it official: headbands are back. Paired with a twisted low bun, here’s an easy style you can wear straight from the office to the gym, or vice versa. (Photo via Frazer Harrison/Getty and Brit + Co)
17. Lady Gaga: Of course Lady Gaga would give us more than a basic low pony. At the Oscars she rocked a wrapped pony with a red floral embellishment that matched her lips. (Photo via Jason Merritt/Getty)
18. Dakota Johnson: The Fifty Shades of Grey star kept it simple and pulled her hair into a messy pony to show off her embellished neckline. (Photo via Jason Merritt/Getty)
19. Ultra Knotted Pony: Knotted ponytails were all over the runway at NY fashion week, but this one at Eckhaus Latta was by far the most intense. Here’s a fun way to make bedhead look a little fancier. (Photo via Fernanda Calfat/Getty)
