This Surprise Ingredient Is the Secret to Getting Perfect Beach Waves
We’re no stranger to a sea salt spray. If we want to spend the day looking like we just came back from chilling in St. Bart, it’s highly likely that we’ll spritz on some of Bumble and bumble’s Surf Spray or John Frieda’s trusty version of the stuff. However, much to our surprise, it seems as though the secret to perfect beach waves isn’t salt, but rather something a little sweeter.
Apparently, sugar-based texturizing sprays have a few added benefits that salt-based products are lacking. Sugar sprays won’t strip keratin or moisture from the hair, and according to Allure, “The sugar extracts found in the new sprays are moisturizing, so they can help strengthen hair and make it bouncier.” Additionally, sugar doesn’t leave a crunchy feel like salt sometimes can. If you’re interested in sweetening up your haircare routine, here are three sprays to put to the test.
1. Keratin Complex Sweet Definition Texturizing Sugar Mist ($17): While there is no sea salt, this spray does include marine ingredients like plankton, kelp and algae, which add moisture and help retain curl. It’s also infused with sunflower seed extract to help protect your color.
2. Tigi Bed Head Candy Fixation Sugar Shock Hair Bodifying Sugar Spray ($13): In addition to smelling like cotton candy, this spray mixes sugar with Glycerin, which provides humidity resistance and wave retention.
3. Boost Sensational Volume Booster ($28): If you’re looking for an organic option, it doesn’t get much better than this spray. With a promise to increase each strand up to 10%, this volume booster includes not just sugar cane but also extracts from Chinese orchids and Mongolian oak.
