Sweet N’ Savory Pastry Puffs
For this week's culinary move, we were inspired by the plethora of odds and ends in our fridge. Four strawberries. A plum. A pear. A handful of grapes. And a quartet of not-quite-finished bits of brie, goat cheese, stilton and parmesan. What's a sweet-and-savory-loving cook to do? Grab a box of puff pastry, preheat the oven, and package up all these fruits and cheeses into a delightful little bundles.
For the ingredients, you should definitely feel free to improvise with what you have. Figs, apples, peaches and nectarines also pair beautifully with cheese.
Ingredients (yields 9-12 pastries):
– strawberries
– 1 plum
– 1 pear
– handful of grapes
– blue stilton
– parmesan
– goat cheese
– brie
– puff pastry (1 sheet)
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Let your puff pastry thaw until its soft enough to roll – usually about 30 minutes.
Then, prepare your fruit. We chopped up our plum, pear, and strawberries. Grapes can stay whole. Set aside.
Next, roll out your pastry dough on a large cutting board. Cut into 9 or 12 pieces, depending on what size you'd like your pastry puffs to be.
Now, onto the fillings! First, brie with pear.
Second, strawberry with parmesan.
Third, goat cheese with plum.
And last, stilton, grapes and a drizzle of honey.
Bake for 15-20 minutes – be sure to check on them after 10 minutes. Since we're dealing with fruit and cheese, there will definitely be some ooze on the pan but it ends up making the bottom of each pastry extra delicious.
Remove and let cool for 5 minutes.
Wrap up in a tea towel to keep warm, and serve!
