That Rumored Taylor Swift and Katy Perry VMAs Duet Isn’t Happening, According to a Producer

With Taylor Swift dropping her new single tonight and Katy Perry releasing a new video today for “Swish Swish,” you can’t blame fans for thinking that the two formerly feuding singers might use this weekend’s VMAs (which Perry is hosting, FYI) to finally bury the hatchet. In recent weeks, there’s been speculation (or perhaps just wishful thinking) about a surprise duet at the MTV event. But one of the show’s producers just dashed that dream (for now).

“That’s not happening, as far as [I know],” Garrett English told Entertainment Tonight. He added that the buzz hasn’t gone unnoticed by the people behind the scenes, but as far as he knows, the buzz is still just a fantasy. “I’ve certainly seen all the rumors flying around, but that’s not happening.”

Of course, even if there were plans for a duet between the superstars, it’s unlikely that a producer would confirm it and spoil the surprise. So there’s (a tiny bit of) hope.

Fans are still pretty convinced it’s happening:

Swift’s last appearance at the VMAs was in 2015, when she (temporarily, it turned out) ended another feud — with Kanye West. The rapper, who infamously interrupted Swift’s acceptance speech for Video of the Year in 2009 to declare that Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time, received the Video Vanguard Award in 2015, and Swift was on hand to present it to him. At the time, she joked, “I’m really happy for you and I’mma let you finish, but Kanye has had one of the greatest careers of all time!”

We’ll just have to watch to see what happens when the 2017 VMAs air this Sunday, August 27.
