Tessa Thompson Opens Up About Her Sexuality: ‘I’m Attracted to Men and Women’
Tessa Thompson has been lauded for her candidness about the bisexuality of her Thor: Ragnorak character Valkyrie, and now the actress is opening up about the fluidity of her own sexuality too.
“I’m attracted to men and also to women,” she told Net-a-Porter in a new profile while discussing the accepting environment of her home life. “I can take things for granted because of my family — it’s so free and you can be anything that you want to be…If I bring a woman home, [or] a man, we don’t even have to have the discussion.”
The Creed star has been rumored in recent months to be dating singer Janelle Monáe, and while she did comment on their connection, she did so without any relationship specificity. “It’s tricky,” she said, “because Janelle and I are just really private people and we’re both trying to navigate how you reconcile wanting to have that privacy and space, and also wanting to use your platform and influence.”
Monáe herself recently came out as pansexual, and Thompson’s involvement in the singer’s Dirty Computer album rollout only further drove the dating speculation. “We love each other deeply,” Thompson told Net-a-Porter. She said that when Monáe’s album was released, friends texted her to say they came out to their family because of the singer. “We’re so close, we vibrate on the same frequency. If people want to speculate about what we are, that’s okay. It doesn’t bother me.”
Thompson has said in the past that her Thor character is bisexual, but any confirming scenes were ultimately edited out of the final film. It won’t be long before Marvel films do have more overt representation, though: Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said that future films will indeed have openly LGBTQ+ characters.
