We Tried a Bra: The Best Nude Bra for Most Skin Tones
When it comes to finding the right bra, we can all agree that it’s no easy feat. But things are changing thanks to more innovative technology and more women-designed products. In that spirit, we’re taking on the challenge of finding the absolute best bra for your needs.
In this installment, we are here to help you find the perfect nude bra so that your seemingly never-ending search for the right bra to wear under white can finally come to an end! While many brands make styles that come in the color “nude,” the actual shades often range from sand to mocha to caramel to café — with none seeming to actually match your skin 100 percent, right? Well, good news, they don’t have to! Unlike face makeup, nude bras are simply meant to be “tonal” under white. (While we appreciate that Fenty Beauty makes 40 different shades of foundation and that Beautyblender‘s Bounce Foundation comes in 32 options, you’re in luck — we don’t need that kind of precision here. Phew!)
When it comes to finding a bra to wear under white, picking a white bra is actually the worst option because it reflects under your clothing. A tonal color essentially disappears. The ideal shade for most skin tones is actually a hybrid nude — a color with hints of pink, blush, rose, grey, and lilac. (The same goes for underwear. It’s all in the tone!)
On our quest to find the perfect nude, we discovered The Hanro Smooth Illusion Collection in the color “Nature.” This bra boasts hints of all the pinks, grays, and purples, and is constructed in a beautiful matte finish that gives added invisibility. Look, we know your skin isn’t this exact color, but the objective here is to hide the bra under your white clothing, not to be a flawless match with your exact skin tone. To really get a sense of how this works, we tested this bra on 16 women of varying skin tones. On some, it pulled from the pink and the tan tones in their skin, and on others, it pulled from the grey and the blue tones, and for ALL of the women, it looked warm and non-reflective under white.
This bra comes in multiple styles — including the soft cup bra ($72) pictured above, plus a spacer bra ($78), spacer T-shirt bra ($86), and underwire bra ($84). If you wear cup size A through E, there’s a “Nature” colored bra match for you. Some might not feel like this color works for them, and that’s ok: Feel free to keep rocking your cafe or caramel colored bras. But we encourage you to give this one a shot too! It’s a *great* solution to wear under white.
