Musical TV shows such as Glee or Crazy Ex-Girlfriend are stacked with outbursts of song and dance in every episode. While these series make it look easy, it can be tricky for a regular comedy or drama to pull off a performance-packed episode while staying true to the spirit of the show. Sometimes, though, non-musical shows pull off brilliant musical episodes — and here are some of the most memorable.
"A Night to Remember," Riverdale:Riverdale's staging of Carrie: The Musical is the latest entry in the musical TV episode category — and arguably one of the most successful attempts on this list. With Archie (KJ Apa) as Tommy, Betty (Lili Reinhart) as Sue, Veronica (Cami Mendes) as Chris, and Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) as Carrie, Riverdale High's production was everything we hoped it would be and more. "Once More With Feeling," Buffy the Vampire Slayer: No list of musical TV episodes would be complete without Buffy's contribution to the genre, in which a demon compels the Scooby gang to break into song to express their innermost feelings. The season 6 ep was so popular that it was shown in theaters after it aired. (Photo via Online USA)
"Regional Holiday Music," Community: In this holiday-themed season 3 parody of the TV show Glee, Jeff and his fellow study group members are tricked into joining Greendale's glee club to save the Christmas pageant. "Song Beneath the Song," Grey's Anatomy: After Callie (Tony winner Sara Ramirez) is badly injured in a car accident with Arizona (Jessica Capshaw), she has an out-of-body experience in which she hallucinates a healthy version of herself watching her colleagues try to save her life. As the Callie projection moves through the hospital, she begins to sing — and other doctors join in. The ep featured several songs that had been significant to the show in the past, including "How to Save a Life" and "Chasing Cars." (Photo via Danny Feld/ABC via Getty Images)
"Girls Vs. Suits," How I Met Your Mother: It might be a stretch to call this a musical episode since there was only one song, but that song, "Nothing Suits Me Like a Suit," earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics, so we're counting it anyway. "The Song in Your Heart," Once Upon a Time: Fairy-tales and music are a magical combination — and OUAT's season 6 ep is no exception. It's really just a wonder that it didn't happen sooner. (Photo via Jack Rowand/ABC via Getty Images)
"Psych the Musical," Psych: "Psych the Musical" was actually two episodes, with 14 original songs and multiple production numbers that made use of Dule Hill's tap-dancing skills. "My Musical," Scrubs: In this season 6 episode, a patient at Sacred Heart hears everyone's speech in song — a consequence of the giant aneurysm in her brain. There are some real classics here, from Turk and JD's "Guy Love" duet to Dr. Cox's musical rant to Carla's "For the Last Time, I'm Dominican." (Photo via Chris Haston/ABC via Getty Images)
"Duet," The Flash: "Duet" was actually a crossover ep between The Flash and Supergirl, both of which are rich in vocal talent. Grant Gustin (who plays Barry) and Melissa Benoist (Kara) are both Glee alums, while Jeremy Jordan (Winn), Jesse L. Martin (Joe), Carlos Valdes (Cisco), and John Barrowman (Malcolm) have all performed on Broadway.
In the ep, Barry and Kara are put into a musical coma by Music Meister (guest star Darren Criss), who forces them to follow a script in their dreamlike state — or die. (Photo via Cate Cameron/The CW)
