These Olympic Donuts Are Going to Win You a Gold Medal
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’re probably aware that the 2016 Olympic games have been going on in Rio, Brazil. Having already won 38 medals (and counting), the USA team has been killing it in the Olympic race. So with that being said, it only makes sense to throw a closing ceremony viewing party to celebrate all the winnings. While you’re most likely going to wear your DIY vintage Olympic bomber jacket and swig on a few Brazilian cocktails, you need to make sure your food game is strong. Hence, these Olympic ring donuts (plus, Olympic medals). With a little bit of food dye and biscuit dough (you heard right), these Olympic donuts will make you the fan favorite and win you the gold medal. Want to know how to make these deliciously easy donuts? Check out the recipe below.
Ingredients:
— 1-3 cups vegetable oil (depending on the size of the pan)
— 3/4 cup confectioner sugar
— 1-2 Tablespoons milk
— pre-cut biscuit dough
— red, blue, yellow and green food coloring
Instructions:
1. Open the biscuit container and lay out all of the pre-cut dough pieces on a flat surface.
2. With a circular object (we used a bottle cap) create a hole in the middle of each dough piece by twisting the cap left and right. If you need to, use a knife to carefully cut around the edges of the donut hole to fully separate the two pieces. Save the donut holes to create the Olympic medals.
3. Fill a skillet with vegetable oil (about two inches deep) over high heat and heat the oil up until it becomes hot enough to fry the donuts. You can test the oil with one of the donut holes by carefully putting it into the oil and seeing if it bubbles.
4. Once the oil is hot, carefully place each donut into the frying pan and fry each side for about one to two minutes. Once both sides are lightly browned, place them on top of paper towels to let the donuts rest.
5. While the donuts cool off, create the donut glaze by mixing the milk and confectioner’s sugar together in a small bowl.
6. Place a small amount of the donut glaze onto seven different plates to create each color of the Olympic rings and medals.
7. How to make each color:
Olympic rings:
Red: four to five drops of red.
Blue: five to six drops of blue.
Black: 10 drops of red, 10 drops of blue, 10 drops of yellow. Mix all together.
Yellow: six to seven drops of yellow.
Green: three drops of blue, two drops of yellow. Mix together.
Olympic medals:
Silver: one drop of black, one to two drops of blue. Mix together
Gold: four to five drops of yellow, one drop of red or orange. Mix together.
Bronze: two drops of red, two drops of green, one to two drops of yellow. Mix together.
8. Carefully dip each donut into the designated color and place them on a flat surface to rest.
Bonus: To create the mini ribbons for the medals, take about seven inches of washi tape and fold it in half lengthwise with the adhesive part of the tape together. Connect the tale ends of the tapes together, place behind a donut hole and lay it on a plate or table.
