See How TheSkimm’s Office Makeover Geniusly Kept Its Homey Vibes
If you’re obsessed with TheSkimm (and, let’s be honest, who isn’t glued to their app?), you’ve probably pictured their Flatiron District offices in New York as a hotbed of #girlboss vibes — and you’d be right. But it hasn’t always been the case. Not so long ago, the workspace for the current events newsletter was in dire need of a major upgrade. TheSkimm partnered with home furnishing etailer Hayneedle to give the entire office the lift it deserves, and the result is striking. A smart mix of playful touches and thoughtful features imbue the workspace with everything you’d expect from TheSkimm: It’s welcoming and accessible, but feels like the home of your cool, in-the-loop best friend. (Oh, did we mention it’s all shoppable too?)
The brand’s signature teal makes a bold and bright appearance throughout the offices, lending an energizing pop to each zone. “Our headquarters’ aesthetic is simple, bright, and comfortable,” says Carly Zakin, co-founder of theSkimm. “We focused on finding pieces that were evocative of the brand and pieces we’d feel comfortable putting in our own homes.”
Working with a large, open footprint, “the challenge for us was converting the huge space into something that felt familiar and inviting — like the living room where theSkimm started,” notes Zakin.
That’s where Hayneedle came in. “We knew from the start that we wanted to work with brands that specialize in home decor instead of traditional office furniture,” says cofounder Danielle Weisberg. In that spirit, couches make an appearance in many of the common areas, keeping the vibe less office-y and more informal.
Hayneedle-exclusive dining tables serve many purposes in TheSkimm’s offices, subbing in for desks, conference tables, and other casual gathering spaces. The effect, Weisberg notes, is much warmer than most workspaces: “We were careful in selecting furniture that never felt too ‘corporate.'”
Wall-to-wall wine racks bring a bit of added texture into this conference room, and make it a go-to destination for happy hour. (Having a wine room is very on-brand for TheSkimm, but why doesn’t every office have this?!)
And although teal is TheSkimm’s signature, they never shy away from incorporating other bright hues as well. This helps each zone stay clearly defined within the larger space, a key factor for a busy office. (And a major perk for color-lovers like us!)
