Time’s ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ Cover Has Us So Excited for 2018
Every glimpse we’ve gotten of the new A Wrinkle in Time movie — from the magical trailer to the out-of-this-world poster — has given us chills. And now, thanks to Time‘s new interview with the team of ladies behind the epic film, we’re more excited than ever to see one of our most beloved childhood stories come to life on screen.
Time‘s new issue (which hits newsstands today) goes behind the scenes with the Hollywood heavyweights (and one up-and-comer) who have taken on the retelling of Madeleine L’Engle’s 1962 novel. In case you need a refresher, it’s the story of a young girl named Meg Murray, a kid who doesn’t fit in at school but who becomes a hero and a warrior when she sets out on an interplanetary quest to save her scientist father (played in the movie by Chris Pine).
Directed by Ava DuVernay and starring Oprah Winfrey (Mrs. Which), Reese Witherspoon (Mrs. Whatsit), Mindy Kaling (Mrs. Who), and 14-year-old Storm Reid (Meg), the film is sure to be an instant classic. As Winfrey told Time, “I felt like we were making the new Wizard of Oz for another generation.”
The movie does indeed seem destined for success, and there’s been a sense of magic around it from the start — in part due to DuVernay’s casting choices. “I wasn’t just casting for actresses,” the Oscar-nominated director told Time. “I was casting for leaders — icons. Reese is the hottest producer in town. Oprah’s the most prolific, venerable legend of television and an artist and entrepreneur. And Mindy’s one of the few women running a show with her name, about her. When I think about the three of them together as a unit of celestial beings, it feels right.”
As right as those three ladies are together, the story centers around a fourth — Meg, who is played by Reid. Revealing that she auditioned around 70 actresses for the role, DuVernay said that Reid was among the first — and best: “She became the benchmark for what I was looking for.”
The young actress, for her part, certainly seems to understand the gravity of the role she’s stepped into, saying that for her, the movie is “about knowing that you’re going to go through dark spaces in your life. You’re not going to be perfect, but the most important thing is not trying to please anybody. It’s loving yourself inside out.”
A Wrinkle in Time will hit theaters on March 9, 2018.
