Tom Dixon and IKEA *Might* Be Working on the Coolest Collab Ever
Get ready to take your hacking skills to the next level with this super secret new IKEA collab. Earlier this summer, IKEA hinted at a collaboration with British super-designer Tom Dixon, but all the details were kept *v* hush hush. Now, according to Dezeen, Dixon’s new sofa might just revolutionize multi-purpose furniture and small-space storage. Dixon went so far as to compare his aluminum-framed sofa to the iPhone (um, what?).
Dixon hinted that he was building a modular base that could easily be transformed into a bed, couch or other type of furniture: “Rather than a bed that you buy for a short period of time, it’s a sort of platform for living that can evolve into a sofa or into a workstation, according to plug-ins that you put on top. Very much like the iPhone, I’m hoping to encourage a whole ecosystem of apps that you stick on top of this basic platform of the bed.”
So instead of buying one piece of furniture that might quickly outlive its usefulness, you would be able to give those pieces a second life with an “ecosystem of add-ons,” saving your wallet AND the environment. Sounds like a win-win situation, doesn’t it? The main piece of this mystery furniture is due to premiere next April at Milan Design Week and roll out to customers sometime in August of 2017. Until then, we’ll be scheming ways to hack it, obvi.
