Trader Joe's is the first place we go to when we want to stock up on indulgent game day snacks or surprisingly unique drinks, and we turn to the grocer to get our fill of healthy salad kits too. We know we should be eating more leafy greens, but sometimes, the thought of all that chopping is just more than we can bear. For those days you want to toss and serve, TJ's has some truly delicious salads. These are our nine tried-and-true favorites.
Trader Joe's Apricot Slaw Kit ($4): Its texture, flavor, and versatility sets Trader Joe's Apricot Slaw Kit apart from the rest. It's made with a hearty base of shredded carrots, broccoli stalks, green cabbage, and kale, meaning it holds up better than other salads even when it’s been sitting in the fridge for more than a few days. Eat alone, pile on top of pulled pork (or pulled jackfruit) sandwiches, or stuff into taco shells to add some healthy crunch to your meal.
Trader Joe's Organic Mediterranean Style Salad Kit ($4): This new offering from Trader Joe's is full of tasty surprises from crunchy flatbread strips and roasted chickpeas to sun-dried tomatoes and feta.
Trader Joe's Broccoli and Kale Slaw Kit ($3): Salad mixes that are more "slaw" style or that contain more robust greens like radicchio, cabbage, and broccoli stalks, tend to perform better in our taste tests. This broccoli and kale slaw kit is no exception. The veggies maintain a subtle crunch even after being tossed with the tangy dressing and won't be too wilted by lunch the next day. We also love the juxtaposition of the slightly bitter greens in this salad with the dried cherries and blueberries that are included.
Trader Joe's Southwestern Chopped Salad ($3): Tasty mix-ins are what set this salad apart. Along with crunchy cabbage and lettuce, each bag comes with pumpkin seeds, cotija cheese, and crispy tortilla chips. The spicy avocado dressing also hits the spot.
Trader Joe's Mango Jicama Slaw ($5): Once again, slaw reigns supreme. Crunchy jicama, lots of herbs, slivers of fruit, and a lime-mango vinaigrette are what makes this a must-buy. Pile it on spicy sausage dogs to play up the contrast in sweet and savory flavor, or serve with classic barbecue to shake things up a bit.
Trader Joe's Mexican Style Corn & Quinoa Salad ($5): You don't even have to mix this salad together yourself. Just dump it on a plate solo (or full of baby greens) and enjoy. Our only complaint? The quinoa becomes a little soggy after sitting in the fridge for a couple of days.
Trader Joe's Tropical Mango Salad Kit ($4): This salad kit has a lot of potential, with a few caveats. The first time we got it, everything was perfect — slightly peppery greens contrasting with dried fruit, nuts, and a tangy mango tamarind cashew dressing. The second time? The greens at the bottom of the bag were practically mush. Inspect the bag carefully before you buy, and you should be all set for a tropical salad experience.
Trader Joe’s Healthy 8-Veggie Mix ($4): We're such big fans of this crunchy eight-veggie mix that we copycatted at home. The downside is that it doesn't come with dressing, but the upside is how versatile it is. Add to soups, sauté with tofu, or toss with vinaigrette — any way you serve the slaw, it makes adding more vegetables to your diet easy.
Trader Joe's Cruciferous Crunch ($2): A toothsome blend of kale, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, green cabbage, and red cabbage adds crunch to sandwiches and wraps and wilts into tender green morsels when simmered in savory broth. You can even blend it up to make a sturdy pesto. To us, that makes it a smart buy, even if you do have to BYOD (bring your own dressing!).
