Why Urban Decay’s New Colored Mascara Replaced My Basic Black
Getting stuck in a makeup rut happens to the best of us. We find ourselves using the same beauty products we used in the ‘90s or relying on the same trusty hues day in and night out. So when a line of new, brightly colored mascaras landed on my desk to test, I was naturally skeptical. I had been loyal to my ride-or-die, daily black coating of mascara for years, and never did I think the latest celebrity-approved trend would actually become my latest obsession.
To my surprise, it was love at first swipe. I tried the just-released Urban Decay Double Team Special Effect Colored Mascara ($24) in a dazzling purple hue called Vice. I’m used to wearing similar eggplant shades as eyeliner to contrast against my green eyes, so I was eager to see the color-wheel-concept (where opposite shades brighten each other) on my eyelashes. I applied the mascara to my upper lashes and added a touch of the metallic to my lower lashes. I immediately understood why this trend has taken off: The dual-ended product provided just enough pop to light up my eyes but was still inky enough to give a bold look.
In addition to brightening, the standout formula left my lashes soft, fluttery, and separated, and curled just as well as my daily go-to. It never became thick or goopy at the tips, which instantly turns me off from others (and makes me have to break out my lash comb). I did notice a bit of smearing on the bottom with the shimmery coat, but I was into it. The soft glimmer added a bit of extra definition in an unexpected way. It was like surprise eyeliner after a couple hours, which I fully embraced. Purple mascara, smudges and all, welcome to my daily routine.
