17 Video Game-Inspired Halloween Costumes
It’s hard to believe we’re already thinking Halloween over here, but it’s never too early to start thinking about your costume. If not, you could be stuck being an Angry Bird again and we know you can do better than that. Our favorite place to draw Halloween inspiration is nostalgia — and video games are full of colorful characters with a lot of personality. One up everybody this year with a video game-inspired Halloween costume that’s sure to score you extra points.
1. Duck Hunt: We’d like to invite this girl over for wine and cheese. Is that weird? (via Geeks Are Sexy)
2. Sonic + Tails: These ladies prove that you don’t have to be wearing fishnets and lingerie to look cute on Halloween. You may even find the makings of these colorful Sonic and Tails outfits in your closet already! (via Fashionably Geek)
3. Link + Zelda: Whoa, this is amazing. We’d pay a few rupees to look that good on Halloween. (via ForeverAdel)
4. Tetris: Go small and do a Tetris screen on a T-shirt, or go big like these guys and craft huge game pieces. Follow their instructions and you’ll be boxed up in no time. (via Instructables)
5. Metroid + Megaman: Too much superhero in one photo. Cannot handle. (via Anna Fischer)
6. Pacman and Ghosts: Aw, those poor ghosts. P.S. What happened to Pacman’s shoes? (via Brooklyn College Anime)
7. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider’s leading lass just requires a bit of weapons/dirt/fake blood/ponytail accessorizing and a trip into your own closet. It’s a badass costume in a pinch! (via Superhero Photography)
8. Mario Kart: The race is on! Mario costumes can be a little tired, but this group punches it up with an amazing Mario Kart version. Or you could try a Dr. Mario or Mario Tennis angle, too!
9. Wreck-It Ralph: Family-style and spot-on, this adorable set of characters is ready to roll… and you could certainly outfit a Power Wheels car for Vanellope Von Schweetz. (via Tiny Tangerines)
10. Kat from HALO: This body armor took months, but the result is so, so good and you can follow along step-by-step to make your own. (via Fishki)
11. Little Mac from Punch Out: Pretty sure we came up with something totally genius here, because we couldn’t find any costume examples anywhere on the Internet, but we think you should find some green boxing gloves and a light pink sweatsuit and go for it. Then send us some pictures!
12. Pokemon: Gotta catch ’em all — costumes, that is. The best way to do a Pokemon costume is with a big group and tons of hair gel. (via Cosplay Island)
11. Zac and Cloud from Final Fantasy VII: Speaking of hair gel, if we can figure out how they made those totally surreal wigs, this will open up a LOT of doors for us… (via Ex-Shadow)
12. Oregon Trail: Noooo, we already died of dysentery so many times… (via David Ngo and Brit + Co)
13. Candy Crush Saga: This DIY costume uses beanbags and various plastic fruits to make the Candy Crush board. Just don’t bring the theme song with you or we’ll have to cut you off. (via Jacquie Long Legs)
14. Mortal Kombat Ensemble: Grab all your best pals and recreate this epic Mortal Kombat cast! (via Eurobeat Kasumi Photography)
15. Sims in the Shower: Once you make the Sims headband, you could be Sims book worm, Sims old lady or just about anything you can think of. (via The Meta Picture)
16. Just Dance: Pick your favorite iconic characters from the Wii game (like the panda bear, obvs) and just dance it out all night long. This would also make a unique group costume, too. Whatever you wear, make sure to do a round of “This Is Halloween” a couple of times before you go out. (via Just Dance)
17. Kirby: OMG, we had sort of forgotten about Kirby’s Dreamland! That guy could eat anything, including loads and loads of Halloween candy that we are about to bring into our homes. (via Anime Nut)
