Love Emoji? Love the ‘90s? You Need These Flannels
If you’re a regular Brit + Co reader, you know our passion for all things emoji. Food, jewelry, costumes, home decor — seriously, we can’t get enough of them. We’re still waiting for certain characters to be designed (without a unicorn emoji, the struggle to emote majesty and wonder is real), but the current beloved characters come together in stylish apparel that gives vintage finds a modern (not to mention eco-friendly) touch.
These revamped ’90s grunge-era fashion offerings come from NYC-based twin duo Morgan and Samantha Elias, who founded The Vintage Twin when they were 19 years old. Recognized for sporting one-of-a-kind garments, the Elias sisters noticed a pattern of strangers approaching them to ask about pieces, so they started styling clients and hosting pop-up shops around the city. From there, they opened a brick and mortar at the University of Michigan, where they were undergraduates and now sell most of their goods from their e-commerce site.
Morgan and Samantha combat mass production by using textiles, fabrics and former garments that would normally end up in a landfill. Each piece from the emoji collection is reworked to sport a giant emoji and the brand logo on the back of a found flannel shirt. Aiming to maintain the one-of-a-kind appeal and purposeful re-manufacturing mission in mind, all apparel from The Vintage Twin is cleaned and restored to mint condition, reworked or used to create a new design. The result? You won’t find anyone else rocking a replica of your swag.
And just when you thought the Elias sisters’ efforts to help you distinguish yourself from the crowd was cool enough, then they went and decided to donate 10% of proceeds to charity. For that, we give them one million smiley faces.
Is one of these emoji flannels is making it to your closet? Tell us in the comments.
