STEP 1: CLEAN YOUR WORKSPACE
Though this may seem like an understood step, it is very important that you are working with a clean surface to ensure the safety and efficacy of the ingredients (and, in turn, you results).
STEP 2: PREPARE YOUR REMEDY
I chose the BIY Redness Remedy ($112) recipe due to a recent mishap from an unfortunate facial in Las Vegas. With my face in full freak-out mode, I only wanted light, pure ingredients in my skincare to avoid letting any unknown chemicals further damage my face. The Redness Remedy recipe was inspired by the wonders of turmeric. “When the skin gets triggered into a cycle of sensitivity, it needs help to de-stress. Turmeric’s natural steroid compounds — like curcumin — help calm the skin’s inflammatory reaction,” Hedges says.
STEP 3: MEASURE THE BASE
“For those who don’t want to blend, our pure and potent bases are ready to use on your skin, body, or hair. It’s up to you when, where, and if you personalize [with mix-ins],” Hedges explains. For a single application mask, the recipe calls for 1-2 tsp of restorative, hydrating Chia Carrot Brûlée Base. Its balm-like consistency makes it the perfect cure-all for my damaged, weathered skin.
STEP 4: ADD THE MIX-INS
Next, drop in three drops each of the mix-in ingredients: anti-inflammatory Turmeric Root and healing Cranberry Seed, which is packed with hydrating omegas and vitamin E, and primes your skin to receive oncoming antioxidants.
STEP 5: APPLY AND LUXURIATE
This next part is the best part — just stir, apply, and repeat. In less than three days of using the balm (after cleansing), all of my Vegas-related skin woes (like redness, and irritated patches of raw skin) were a distant memory. Above all, making the formula myself rather than reaching for a ready-made remedy felt like a form of self-care. I felt invested and free to relax to the max while my skin drank up this homemade superfood salve.
