Why I’m Teaming Up with Katie Couric

I’ve loved Katie Couric since I was a little girl. I would literally set my alarm clock to wake up during summers off from school just so that I could watch her each morning on the Today Show. I’m not sure any other teenager was so crazy to do such a thing. But I was obsessed — with the show, with her, with everything.

A couple years ago, I read her book, The Best Advice I Ever Got, which also had a profound impact on my life. In fact, it was that very book that pushed me over the edge to leave a great job at Google in order to take a leap as an entrepreneur. I highly recommend it to anyone who feels lost, needs a nudge of encouragement, or wants to become a more motivated human being.

Knowing all of this, you can imagine my excitement/shock/glee when I was contacted by a few of the folks putting together Katie’s new daytime talk show, Katie. They were looking for a technology correspondent and wanted to chat. Things kind of spun out from there. I met with the team, I met with Katie, and they eventually asked me to come on board as their resident digital diva (obviously a nickname, not a working title!). As such, I’ll be a regular contributor on the show and will also write a few pieces for the Katie website, discussing what’s new and interesting in the world of technology and why it matters. The segments will range from serious to silly and my first one starts tomorrow on a show all about hair! Can you take any guesses at what app I’ll be demo’ing?

I am not lying when I tell you that I could not be more excited to be working with Katie. If you’ve watched the first week of the show, you know just how awesome it is. Katie Couric is like the best of Oprah and Ellen, combined. She discusses important issues that affect our lives, yet also creates an element of fun (check out her awesome J Lo dance moves from last week). Knowing her a bit more personally now, I can also tell you that she is genuinely one of the most kind and girl-next-door types of women I’ve ever met. Plus, she has now joined Michelle Obama on my list of Hot Arm Idols. Seriously, I need her work out tips, stat.

The show airs on ABC each afternoon around 3PM. You can find the exact time your local station has it on by putting in your zip code on the homepage of her site.

What do you think of Katie’s new show? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below or over on Twitter. Hope to “see you” tomorrow!

Update: My first segment premiered on Wednesday, September 19th. For those that missed it, you can watch it below!
