This Is the Difference Between Mindful Eating and Intuitive Eating

First, there was mindful eating, which extended the concept of mindfulness to our plates for healthier choices. But just when we thought we’d gotten the core tenets of this eating pattern down, another dietary approach with a similar name has come along: Intuitive Eating. If you’ve heard these two terms and are feeling a bit confused about whether they can be used interchangeably (or whether one is somehow an extension of the other), you’re not alone. As a nutritionist myself, I initially assumed that “Intuitive Eating” was simply the new lingo all the cool kids were using to talk about mindful eating. As it happens, however, though these two food philosophies have many similarities, they also come with distinct differences in purpose and practice.

A Bit of Background

Before we delve into the contrasts between mindful eating and Intuitive Eating, let’s take a look at the history. As you’re likely aware, the mindfulness movement, so popular lately in meditation and therapy, is not a new phenomenon. The idea of anchoring attention in the present stretches thousands of years back into Zen Buddhist history. So although mindfulness as applied to the food we eat (and how we eat it) has been promoted by a handful of prominent academics — such as Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts and Brian Wansink at Cornell — no single individual can really take credit for it. (Still, for the sake of a timeline, many people view the publication of Wansink’s book Mindless Eating ($25) in 2006 as the starting point for increased awareness of the concept.)

Unlike these rather nebulous origins, Intuitive Eating has a much more structured background. It’s a trademarked program developed by two registered dietitians, Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch. In an effort to help their clients establish healthy relationships with food, Tribole and Resch outlined a 10-principle philosophy in their 1995 book Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That Works ($18). Twenty-three years later, the program has grown into its own empire of books and workshops. Dietitians and other health professionals may now receive training to become certified Intuitive Eating counselors.

The differences between mindful eating and Intuitive Eating don’t end with their backstory. Though both may yield the same end results (like achieving healthy weight or enjoying food more), they do so via distinct paths.

What Is Mindful Eating?

Mindful eating, as its name implies, aims to engage and focus the mind. Dining mindfully might mean, for example, eliminating distractions like TV or your phone in order to concentrate on food as its own event. “By choosing mindful eating, you are choosing to enjoy your meal in a calm and comfortable place,” says Phoenix, AZ-based registered dietitian nutritionist Yaffi Lvova. “You forego distraction to focus on the complete sensory experience of the food: the taste, texture, temperature, smell, and your natural biological reactions to it.”

A mindful attitude toward eating can take on other forms as well. Savoring is a mainstay of the mindful experience of food. Taking time to enjoy something delicious tends to make it even more satisfying — often leading to consuming less of it. Mindful eating also emphasizes paying attention to the body’s cues of hunger and fullness: Eat when you’re hungry. Stop when you’re full. (What could be more logical?) And pausing to give thanks before eating creates mental space for contemplating questions like where your food came from and how it will nourish your body.

Okay, So What Is Intuitive Eating?

If mindful eating focuses on the mental experience of food, you might say Intuitive Eating takes this one step further, from the mental to the emotional — and beyond. To varying degrees, eating is an act loaded with emotion, both positive and negative. For some, this can lead to eating disorders or unhealthy relationships to food. Certain foods become virtuous, others villainous. In consuming them, we can assign these labels to ourselves as well. Intuitive Eating aims to turn this black-and-white, emotionally-fraught thinking on its head — as reflected in Principles Number One: “Reject the Diet Mentality” and Number Three: “Make Peace With Food.”

Also in contrast to mindful eating (which by definition pertains only to food), Intuitive Eating encompasses far more than diet. With principles like “Exercise — Feel the Difference” and “Honor Your Feelings Without Using Food,” the program attempts to move hyper-vigilance around food choices to a more comprehensive understanding of health. Says Lvova, who encourages Intuitive Eating with her clients, “My clients are searching for true health — the kind reflected in blood results, mood, quality of sleep, and overall life enjoyment.”

This big-picture approach to food and health means that Intuitive Eating is rarely used with weight loss as an end goal. (Alternatively, in pop culture and even in clinical studies, proponents point to mindful eating’s effectiveness as a weight management strategy.) “One of three things will happen when you start to follow IE,” says Lvova. “You’ll lose weight, you’ll gain weight, or you’ll stay the same weight. But you’ll have so much more room in your head and in your life for joy.”

Depending on your goals, either a mindful or intuitive approach to eating may be best for you. With their shared purpose of giving the body what it truly needs, both can lead to better food choices, spot-on portion sizes, and numerous measures of health improvement. Shawn entered the spotlight as a teenager, quickly becoming a heartthrob — and a controversial topic of conversation. For years, people speculated that he was actually gay, leading him to a lot of frustration, according to his conversation with Dax Shepard on the Armchair Expert podcast. But now, he's finally addressing the rumors head on.

During his show at Red Rocks Amphitheater, Shawn addressed the crowd pretty directly. The musician shared, "Since I was really young, there's been this thing about my sexuality, and people have been talking about it for so long." He continued, nothing that he thinks "it's kind of silly" in general that people were so focused on it because he thinks "sexuality is such a beautifully complex thing, and it’s so hard to just put into boxes."

The star elaborated, "It always felt like such an intrusion on something very personal to me, something that I was figuring out in myself, something that I had yet to discover, and still have yet to discover." Throughout the speech, Shawn played his guitar, eventually noting that writing "The Mountain" — a song that calls out the rumors about his romantic life — "felt very important" to him because he "could address it [the rumors]" in a way that made sense to him.

Finally, Shawn opened up. He said, "The real truth about my life and my sexuality is that, man, I’m just figuring it out like everyone. I don't really know sometimes, and I know other times. And it feels really scary because we live in a society that has a lot to say about that."

Closing the whole speech out, Shawn finished with, "I’m trying to be really brave and just allow myself to be a human and feel things. And that’s all I really want to say about that for now."

Olivia Munn bared it all in her latest SKIMS ad, proving you don't have to hide your scars. The actress posed in a campaign for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, supporting Susan G. Komen®and highlighting her own journey with the disease. She looked absolutely stunning in every photo, but the most gorgeous moment was the way Munn didn't shy away from showing her mastectomy scars. She spoke to TODAY about her experience during the shoot, and why she ultimately decided to ditch her insecurities. Here's what she had to say!

Munn shared with TODAYthat she didn't initially plan to show her scars on the set. The campaign was focused on her recovery post-breast cancer diagnosis, but the makeup artist had a hard time covering up the scars throughout the shoot. She explained that she took a look in the mirror and thought, "I’m done being insecure about my scars." From there, she took the idea to show them off to the SKIMS team — and the rest is history.

And while she was scared to be so vulnerable on camera, this was ultimately a really empowering move for Munn. She elaborated that there are "so many women that have these same scars" who feel just as insecure as she did about them — and she really hopes those women see this ad. "Skims is so iconic and associated with beauty and sex appeal, and cancer really doesn't have that same connotation," she said. "So I just really hope that other women who have gone through my same path feel a little better after seeing it."

The star also took to Instagram to give a behind-the-scenes explanation of her experience. She reiterated that she was "done being insecure" about her scars. "Every mark life has left behind on my body is proof of how hard I fought," she wrote. "I hope other women who have been self-conscious about their scars see these photos and feel all the love I’m sending."

She also shared that SKIMS will donate 10% of their bra sales (except bralettes) to Susan G. Komen® — a charity dedicated to finding a cure for breast cancer — from October 23-31 in stores and online. "It’s really meaningful to be part of an initiative that supports research and helps countless individuals impacted by breast cancer," she said.

All of this comes on the heels of Munn's announcement earlier this year that she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She revealed the diagnosis came after recently tested negatively for well-known breast cancer genes and had normal results from her annual mammogram — but her doctor to check her Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Score. The test showed Munn had a 37% risk of breast cancer, so she pushed for more answers that eventually lead to her diagnosis.

Since then, Munn shared with PEOPLE that she had 4 surgeries in 10 months and underwent medically-induced menopause — all the while juggling being a new mom with husband John Mulaney. She shared, "I'm lucky. We caught it with enough time that I had options. I want the same for any woman who might have to face this one day."

After that March announcement, it's clear Munn is dedicated to raising awareness for women's health — and particularly their options. While chatting about the SKIMS campaign, Munn told TODAY, "You've got to go your doctor and you inundate them with information and you don't stop until they give you the test you need."

After news broke of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's daughter, Shiloh, changing her last name from "Shiloh Jolie-Pitt" to "Shiloh Jolie," the whole world is wondering just what happened between this superstar family. Almost 10 years after Jolie and Pitt's divorce, it seems like the pair's children continue to draw a clear line in the sand, choosing to only remain close to their mother, and distance themselves even further from their dad.

Obviously, there's a lot of history to uncover from Jolie and Pitt's whirlwind (and controversial) romance, short-lived marriage, and abrupt breakup. Here's everything we know about what exactly is going on, and why this drama is unfolding between this high-profile Hollywood family.

How long were Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie together?

The couple was only married from 2014-2016 when Jolie filed for divorce. Although they were only married for a short while, their relationship lasted much longer than that, having been together and starting a family long before their legal nuptials.

The iconic couple met in 2004 on the set of the famous movie, Mr. and Mrs. Smith — and despite Pitt being married to the Jennifer Anniston at the time, Jolie and Pitt fell in love. After this, the pair had a whirlwind romance over the years, filled with many movies and many kids. They decided to get married in Miraval in 2014, only to file for divorce about a year and a half later in 2016.

The couple shares six kids together! Their names are: Shiloh, Pax, Vivienne, Knox, Zahara, and Maddox. Zahara and Maddox were their first kids that they had (and actually were adopted!), then Shiloh was their first biological child, after that Pax was adopted, and lastly Angelina gave birth to the twins Vivienne and Knox!

Why did Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt separate?

After Jolie abruptly filed for divorce from her husband, news started circulating that an incident might've happened on a plane between Jolie and Pitt in front of her children. In an FBI report given to CNN, Jolie accused Pitt of "injuring her and verbally abusing their children during a heated encounter aboard a private jet in 2016." This report has since been heavily redacted, but states that Pitt had been "drinking heavily" at the time of the incident, when he verbally attacked one of their children, and when Jolie confronted him, he “grabbed her by her head,” “grabbed her by the shoulders,” shook her, and was yelling very aggressive statements to her in front of their family. Angelina suffered many injuries from the abuse, even giving the FBI documentation of the bruises. Right after this, the FBI investigated Pitt's actions, but ultimately there were no charges were filed against Pitt.

Immediately following the investigation, Jolie requested full custody of their six children.

While Jolie requested full custody, Pitt came back and requested joint, which he was then granted in 2021. While he may have visitation rights and custody, most children are completely estranged from Brad and choose not to see him. Pax is also very publicly protective over his mother, so although we don't know if he's chosen a side, per say, we know he loves and protects his mom. The youngest ones, Knox and Vivienne, are still required to visit Brad for the time being, due to the joint custody agreement.

Their daughter, Zahara, has publicly declared her new name while at a ceremony for her sorority at Superman College. In the viral video, she announces herself to be "Zahara Marley Jolie" effectively removing "Pitt" from her name completely — though the change has not legally been made yet.

In regards to their other children, People recently announced that Shiloh was removing the "Pitt" as well, simply going by "Shiloh Jolie" legally. The rest of the kids' names remain the same for now.

How is Brad Pitt handling the estrangement?

Pitt has dropped sources and quotes over the last few years hinting at how he feels isolated from his children, and their decision to remain estranged. People recently reported that a source very close to Brad says, “He’s aware and upset that Shiloh dropped his last name." The source continued, "The reminders that he’s lost his children, is of course not easy for Brad. He loves his children and misses them. It’s very sad."

While Pitt may be upset, it's clear the kids are very frustrated over something that occurred in the family — plane incident, or otherwise — so it's ultimately up to the children, and how they want to proceed with (or without) a relationship with their father!

We know this must be hard on the whole family, but we hope their all able to find peace and happiness in the future!

Why are their children staying away from the spotlight?

On October 27, Angelina spoke with E! News at the premiere of her new project Maria. Though she was there to celebrate the film's debut, she didn't shy away from answering questions about the future of her and Brad's kids. Though their parents are famous, Angelina knows her kids aren't drawn to that lifestyle. "No, I think they're especially shy, very private people," she said. "...they want to be private."

An anonymous source told People how hard Angelina's worked to make sure the kids have a sense of love and normalcy these days. "In the past few years, she's been able to create a life for herself and the kids that make them all happy. It was a struggle for a while, but Angie is proud about how resilient and strong the kids are."
