Top Women’s Health Trends to Watch in 2018

How can you make 2018 the best year you’ve ever had? We talked to Dr. Nita Landry — OB/GYN and co-host of talk show The Doctors — to get her advice on living better this year. From fresh new ideas to returning faves, here are the hottest health trends she expects to see in 2018.

1. “Me” Time: More women are beginning to understand the importance of self-care, or “me” time. They’re also realizing that it’s not just about fancy, expensive spa treatments or regular manis and pedis. Instead, they’re focusing on everyday habits that bring them happiness. For example, more women are learning a new hobby, dedicating 30 minutes to meditation every morning, or ensuring that they get enough sleep. Self-care benefits everyone, because when women feel more relaxed, they have an enhanced ability to support their families and uplift their communities. It’s time to unplug, kick your feet up, and feel good about it!

2. Body Positivity: This movement is about accepting your body the way it is — and helping everyone else feel comfortable in their skin too. “I’ve noticed that women who are more confident about their bodies are more likely to speak openly about sexual health issues like low libido, and they’re more likely to report issues such as urinary incontinence,” Dr. Landry shares.

3. HIIT and Strength Training: High-intensity interval training (or HIIT) is a workout that alternates between focused bursts of activity and fixed periods of less activity, or even complete rest. For instance, you might run as fast as you can for one minute and walk for two minutes, then repeat that three-minute set five times for a 15-minute workout. Women are also adding strength training to their cardio workout routines. Building more muscle leads to health benefits like a higher metabolic rate and stronger bones and joints. Dr. Landry recommends adding these workouts to your schedule two to three times per week.

4. Robot-Assisted Surgery: In gynecology, robot-assisted surgery may increasingly become an option for some patients who would otherwise need larger incisions. Other surgical specialties will also continue to reap the benefits of robot-assisted procedures. These minimally invasive surgeries are associated with smaller incisions, shorter hospital stays, and faster recoveries.

5. Wearable Health Devices: With features that range from knowing how many calories you burned while running to checking your sleep patterns, we’ll be seeing more of these tech gadgets that help women track their activity levels and health. “The wearable devices frequently used today might soon be replaced with clothing,” speculates Dr. Landry. “For example, the company Athos plans to launch fitness clothes that measure muscle activity, respiration, and heart rate in real time. Also, Google is working with jeans manufacturer Levi Strauss & Co to develop clothing that interacts with your devices. These garments will have sensitive surfaces that will be able to check your weight, respond to your movements, and even make a phone call.”

6. New Healthier Noodles: Move over, zucchini noodles: Lentil and quinoa pastas are here. Dr. Landry predicts more alternative pasta options will appear in 2018. They’ll still be easy to cook and taste similar to regular noodles, but they’ll have fewer simple carbs while offering more nutrients.

We’d love to hear how you’re planning to make 2018 your healthiest year yet. Tweet us your thoughts @BritandCo.

The Perfectionist's Guide to Losing Control: A Path to Peace and Power by Katherine Morgan Schafler

Perfectionists, we've been summoned with a guide that wants to give us permission to stop trying to control everything. It's so funny — this book landed on my radar after stressing about how I haven't felt in control for a long time. See how life works?

Anyway, psychotherapist Morgan Schafler knows we've been spoon-fed ideology about having balance in our lives, and feels like it's actually not helpful in the long run. She even helps categorize different versions of perfectionism: classic, intense, Parisian, messy, and procrastinator. Yes, that's right. Your procrastinating habit is rooted in perfectionism.

Instead of telling you to get rid of a part of who you are, Schafler breaks down why we respond to things a certain way and teaches how to live life so that our perfectionism doesn't necessarily control every single thing we do.

The Secret Language of the Body by Jennifer Mann and Karden Rabin

Do you know the role our nervous systems plays in our bodies? It's basically our in-house communication center for messages between our brains and bodies. It's what triggers or flight or fight mode, which comes in handy if we're trying to escape a bristly bear in the woods, but does nothing for us if we're upset someone cut us in line at Starbucks. Little moments like that lead to nervous system dysregulation and can cause a lot of pain.

Mind-body practitioners Jen Mann and Karden Rabin wrote The Secret Language of the Body as way to help us understand what truly goes on in our nervous systems. They dive into topics like somatic therapy, Polyvagal theory, and how our minds and bodies are connected so we can stop living in survival mode.

The Joy of Saying No by Natalie Lue

You know what's even harder to navigate life with besides perfectionism? It's being a people pleaser and considering everyone else's feelings before you think about your own.

The Joy of Saying No aims to explain how this is often rooted in our childhoods from being known as the good kid to the one who believes overachieving makes them more likable. It's true these roles served a function, but they can also stop us from being who we are as adults. Natalie Lue wants to help us recognize how we continue to operate in people-pleasing mode via six steps so we can reset our connection to others.

Alright, Gilmore Girls fans — it’s time to get serious. Us avid re-watchers know the beloved (and even hated) characters of the television series very well (hey Rory, Lorelai, Jess, Logan, Dean, Luke, and Sookie). Yet, despite our unwavering commitment to these guys and gals, there are several side characters who provide comic relief, exciting storylines, and necessary advice.

These supporting characters are the ones we like to call the underrated stars of Gilmore Girls. And they deserve way more love then we give them. Scroll on to see the top six people who truly made the show a binge-worthy one.

Lane Kim

Warner Bros. Television

Lane Kim, AKA Rory’s best friend since basically forever, is often overlooked as a main character. She’s actually an extremely relatable and compelling person due to her constant struggles that so many viewers have also dealt with. Kim’s complicated relationship with her mom is highlighted frequently, showcasing the ups and downs of extreme parental expectations.

She navigates romantic endeavors with both Dave and Zack (whom she ends up having two twin children with, showcasing a new parenting storyline) while simultaneously pursuing her passion for music. And throughout all of her personal grappling, Lane remains an upstanding, loyal friend to Rory. You heard it here first: Lane Kimdeserves more respect!

Michel Gerard

Saeed Adyani/Netflix

In all our favorite TV shows, there’s always that one side character who puts the main one in their place. In Gilmore Girls, that supporting character is Michel Gerard — and he does it in the most wonderful, humorous, and sassy way possible. Gerard is Lorelai’s co-worker, and while his often-cynical attitude can frustrate her at times, they also have a deeply loving friendship. He brings the show to life with his brutal honesty, witty remarks, and snarky sophistication that many viewers adore, but don’t give enough credit to. Everyone needs a Michel Gerard in their life!

Kirk Gleason

Saeed Adyani/Netflix

How could you not love Kirk and his many, many occupational changes. His slightly odd and quirky personality adds a lightness to the more serious plotlines in the show — and it’s much-needed. Kirk is often cast to the side by the residents of Stars Hollow themselves, but his steadfast loyalty to the town and his fun eccentricities make him a character that you just can’t help but love.

Miss Patty

Saeed Adyani/Netflix

Miss Patty, the town’s dance instructor, is a strong female character who is totally underappreciated. She works as a guiding womanly force for young girls, including Rory and Lane, and displays an evident independence that so many people strive for IRL. Miss Patty doesn’t take any nonsense from others and prioritizes her passion for dance, making her a beacon for following your dreams. She’s the queen of the series, TBH.

Babette Dell

Warner Bros. Television

Every town needs a local gossip, and Babette Dell fulfills that role perfectly. She acts as a longtime friend and neighbor of Lorelai’s, often letting her in on town secrets and offering advice (likely through inappropriate comments, which adds an entertaining touch of comic relief). Babette is also an inherently warm person who loves her family, community, and food — arguably, the most relatable of them all. You can tell she always means well towards others, making her an extremely lovable character.

Lindsay Lister

Warner Bros. Television

Lindsay is the very sweet local girl who formerly attended high school with Rory and, unfortunately, gets caught up in a bit of a love triangle with Rory and Dean. After Rory and Dean's romance comes to an end, he develops a relationship with Lindsay, tying the knot rather quickly. But…then Dean cheats on her, while married, with Rory. Let’s be real here: those two, lovebirds or not, were in the wrong. Lindsay! Deserved! Better!

Who's the first person you turn to when you're having a rough day? For some people it's a parent or a partner, while others find solace in their best friends. Friendships can extend your lifespanand boost your confidence, and considering our deepest relationships can change our behavior, surrounding yourself with great people can even make you a better person.

And while friendship with women your own age means you can bond over shared experiences (who else will understand how badly Gen Z wanted to be Justin Bieber's "One Less Lonely Girl" than other members of Gen Z?), a recent viral video from Maddy Sue Hull shows that young people are craving intergenerational relationships, too. And the great thing is, not only are they fun, they're actually healthy!

Angela Roma/Pexels

The video, which currently has 1.3 million likes and 4.5 million views, reveals that Maddy had been desiring more friendships when she met an older woman named Kathy at a gas station. "Now [we] see each other multiple times a week, go on lunch dates, and are best friends," she says in the video caption.

Maddy and Kathy's relationship inspired viewers to think about their own relationships in a new way, and even led to some of Maddy's followers donating money to buy Kathy new furniture! "You showed her that it's never too late to meet someone amazing in your life," one comment says, while another reads, "My sweet grandma passed away last year and some older lady adopted me and it's been so healing."

What are the benefits of multigenerational friendships?

cottonbro studio/Pexels

Friendship Expert and Life Coach Shari Leid reveals that intergenerational friendships can benefit older generations just as much as younger generations. "Seeing the world from different angles—through the experiences and history of the older generation and the fresh ideas and openness of the younger generation—is truly enlightening," she says. "The older generation brings a sense of reassurance that things will work out, while the younger generation embodies the boldness to try something new."

Leid experienced this firsthand during her 50 States Project, where she met with a different woman in each state to find similarities between us all. "The beauty of getting older, I realized, lies in the opportunity to continuously make new friends," she adds.

RDNE Stock project/Pexels

I was overjoyed to learn that not only can friendship influence our experiences, but it can actually benefit our minds and bodies too. "In Blue Zones, where people live longer and healthier lives, the secret often lies in their relationships," Leid says. "The laughter shared with friends, which isn’t always possible in the workplace or other relationships, acts as a vital mental health fix. This happiness reduces stress hormones that can be damaging to our bodies, enhancing our overall well-being."

How to be closer to friends?

Anastasia Shuraeva/Pexels

While it's so easy to get into a routine of work, chores, and bedtime (it is entirely possible for me to go multiple days without seeing another person), that mental health fix is just another reason it's important to prioritize friendships. And Leid says growing roots with the people you love all comes down to two supposedly simple concepts: time and conversation.

"It’s about being there for each other, sharing personal experiences, and being open," she says. Leid recommends seeing each other in person, and making time for phone calls to hear each other's voices. "Friendship thrives on small gestures—checking in, spending time, and being consistent. It doesn’t require grand gestures. The accumulation of small, thoughtful actions strengthens the bond, creating a tapestry of connection and support that enriches our lives."

RDNE Stock project/Pexels

If you're thinking that sounds a lot easier said than done, you're not alone. Dr. Leid shares a few thought-starters for helping deepen relationships. "Go deeper with your conversations by asking about their childhood," she adds. "These shared conversations open up a level of intimacy that goes beyond casual friendships. They deepen relationships, making friends feel more connected and helping you understand each other better."

And the more you understand and care about each other, the deeper your relationship will go. Check out our Questions For Friends andQuestions To Avoid Painful Small Talk for more ideas on where to start!

One thing about me is if a TV show has a catchy name, it’s going to catch my attention. And The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives did exactly that. If you’re a reality TV girly like me, this show is 1000 percent for you. It has everything from a soft swinging scandal, secret Tinder account, and fruity cereal (IYKYK) to clout chasing and soda obsessions.

The show is set in Salt Lake City, Utah, following eight Mormon social media influencers who make up #MomTok, a group of Mormon moms who film TikTok videos. (Truthfully it took me until episode 3 to tell them apart — they look so similar, it’s those stunning Utah curls).

Their worlds blew up overnight after Taylor Frankie Paul shared in a TikTok Live that she took part in “soft swinging,” which led to her and her husband divorcing and impacting the friendships of this group of women. And as such, The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives was gifted to us all.

BUT the soft swinging scandal isn’t the only shocking moment of this series. Here are a few other gasp-worthy moments that need to be talked about.

Every Show Needs A Villain — Enter Whitney Leavitt

Fred Hayes/Disney

While Taylor dealt with the fallout of the soft swinger scandal, Whitney Leavitt was dealing with her own scandal. She led the #MomTok group to believe she relocated to Hawaii when the scandal broke to get away from the noise, but Whitney shared that was a cover up, and the real reason her family relocated was because the rumors of her husband having a Tinder account (for their entire marriage) were true. So she basically admitted Taylor was her scapegoat to get out of town.

And while Whitney was hoping for the girls to rally around her during this truth bomb about her marriage, she felt her announcement was overshadowed by Taylor’s miscarriage news (who became pregnant shortly after), ultimately driving Whitney to not attend Taylor’s baby shower. All of a sudden, Whitney doesn't want to be involved with Taylor, and claims her and Taylor only have an online relationship instead of a real one… Umm I’m sorry what? This was the start of Whitney paving her way as the show's villain.

Ashley Rose Ramirez/Disney

Fast forward to a girls trip for Mayci Neeley’s birthday, Whitney felt the group’s friendships haven’t been authentic. “Let’s be honest,” she told Mayci, “have we all ever been genuine, real friends? Or has there always been an agenda? Has there always been some sort of transaction needed?” Tell me if I’m wrong, but Whitney hasn’t been a true friend if she feels a transaction is needed and feels like some of these friendships don’t exist IRL, but I digress.

After the girls trip, Whitney thought it would be in her best interest to unfollow the women on social media and abruptly leave the group chat, but later expresses how nobody called and asked why she left...Unfollowing your friends and leaving the group chat feels so high school and attention seeking IMO. At this point of the show, I was questioning what I was watching, but I couldn’t turn it off.

In the series finale, Whitney made the not-so-shocking decision to not attend her best friend Mayci’s launch party, claiming she “wasn’t in the space and needed some time from the group.” Hasn’t Macyi always had Whitney’s back through everything, and now she’s not going to show up for her? Aren’t one of the #Momtok’s core values to support each other and have one another's back? Whitney I need answers!!

The Soda Obsession

Disney

Let’s move on to another revelation in the show that I can’t stop thinking about. So you may or may not have caught that in every episode, the women mention their love of soda or have a giant soda in hand. My immediate thought was "what is up with this soda obsession?" Well, Mormons do not drink alcohol or hot beverages, as they have been told by God “Hot drinks are not for the body or belly.” Therefore Mormons like to indulge and treat themselves to a soda. Which is why in Utah, you’ll find Soda shops on almost every corner.

For these women, nothing brings them more joy than a soda. And no they aren’t slamming back a Diet Coke or Dr. Pepper. They’re drinking dirty sodas, which consist of a classic soda mixed with syrups or creams.

As shown in the show, Demi Engemann has a very specific Swig order which consists of sparkling water, sugar free coconut syrup, sugar free vanilla syrup, sugar free raspberry syrup, sugar free pineapple syrup and coconut cream.

I am desperate to try her drink. Does Swig ship? Or can someone please open a location in Miami?

The Cereal Brand Heard Around The Country

Fred Hayes/Disney

During episode 3, we found out Demi Engemann confided in Whitney Leavitt during a girls trip about some intimate details regarding her sex life with husband Bret Engemann. Well, Whitney shared those details with other women in the group and the series producers. Whitney told producers, “What can I say? The fruity cereal has to do with taste,” in an interview during the episode, while smirking about it like a true villain.

Fast forward to later in the episode during Demi's Galentine’s Day celebration, Whitney thought it would be a funny prank to gift Demi a box of Fruity Pebbles and have her open the gift in front of the group (and the cameras), making this intimate detail of Demi’s marriage more public. But the prank of course, does not go the way Whitney had planned because Demi is not happy. I am so curious to know what Whitney thought Demi’s reaction would be?

And if Demi did send out texts about the intention of the evening, that was a low blow on Whitney’s end to gift her a box of Fruity Pebbles onscreen. And honestly, it's a bit hypocritical coming from Whitney, who's been preaching she wants to create a safe space with #Momtok. It’s a little sus.

What Happened in Vegas?

Fred Hayes/Disney

One of the more dramatic moments of the series happens in Vegas…of all places! The group celebrates Layla’s birthday in a very non-traditional Mormon way, at Chippendales. It's revealed Jen Affleck’s husband Zac Affleck (yes — related to Ben Affleck — first cousins once removed) has a controlling and misogynistic ick to him when he questions her character and threatens to divorce Jen if she goes to the Chippendales show. Which 1) she knew nothing about, considering the show was a surprise and 2) she didn’t even stay to see the show!

In a very authentic display of friendship and sisterhood, the women really rally around Jen, voicing their concerns, and ultimately their disgust, for her husband. (This man even talked badly about her friends and their marriages, woof.) We don’t often see acts like this on reality TV. This felt very real and raw, and we must protect Jen at all costs.

The series ended with a few unanswered questions, #1 being will #MomTok survive this? And with this show being one of Hulu’s most-watched unscripted shows, we’re waiting patiently for Hulu to announce a second season.
