8 Small and Big Ways to Live More Sustainably After Kids

sustainable living with kids

From the moment you bring your first child home convenience wins over anything else, even sometimes the planet (you're just sooooo tired). Baby wipes, disposable diapers, paper towels, Amazon Prime! How do you go from living a sustainable life to a parent life without messing with Mother Earth? Here are small and big ways to get back on the eco wagon after parenthood, at any stage. Plus, simple ways to teach kids to be more mindful of the world, and its resources, around them.

1. Choose experiences in favor of toys. Plastic toys account for 90 percent of the market and most are nearly impossible to recycle. Go for quality over quantity and choose sustainably made toys over the cheap plastic variety when possible. Even better: experts suggest that vacations with your child or even outdoor experiences can give them a brain development boost that playing at home can't. It works the "seeking" part of the brain that can lead to growth in the area responsible for cognitive functioning, problem-solving, emotional expression, memory, language, and judgment.

2. Ditch single-use items. Hold the juice boxes, pouches, and even balloons. For one-use food items, try to buy in bulk (here are some super easy baby food recipes to make at home for the week) and opt for reusable containers, bottles and bags vs. one-use plastic baggies and bottles.

Also, let's talk balloons. The ones that float into the air not only bring on major tears but can end up in our waterways, where marine life can confuse them for food, or worse, strings can entangle them. Several states are proposing a ban on the helium kind (the Marine Conservation Society estimates that the number of balloons along shorelines has tripled in the past decade).

Kids love balloons — we get it — so the trick is to make sure they are weighted down and are disposed of properly (cut them to remove the helium, and then recycle the foil or mylar ones or compost 100 percent latex ones, which are biodegradable).

3. Support a farmer, grow a garden. Farmer's markets not only support local farmers but they help reduce the carbon emissions associated with delivering food from corporate farms to supermarkets. You're also supporting someone invested in your land and community. Many markets host fun things to do for kids — music, fruit tastings, crafts. And fruits and veggies aren't stored in plastic containers, just toss in your reusable bag and go! If you want to go big: Plant a garden and grow your own food. Even a small herb garden at home can teach kids the basics of where food comes from.

4. Walk, bike, scoot to school. Taking the time to walk or bike with your kids to school can be a chance to bond and get in some exercise before the work day grabs your attention. If you're a late riser or have a distance to travel connect with other parents to start a carpool, which will save you time and gas. If you want to go big: When it's time to upgrade your mini for a car suitable for a growing family look at EVs or more fuel-efficient rides.

5. Shop secondhand. Past the first baby stage you learn quickly that kids grow out of clothes fast — and also destroy them once they get mobile. Consignment shops for kids are brilliant and also great at curating the stain-free cream of the crop. Welcome hand-me-downs from family and friends and even host a clothing swap party for all your babies, big and small.

6. Use eco-friendly cleaning products or make your own! Sustainable cleaning productsare easy to come by these days and are more affordable — you can even buy in bulk to reduce your plastic consumption. But there are easy ways to just make your own nontoxic cleaners at home. It's amazing what a little vinegar and baking soda will do!

7. Give your home an energy boost. LED lights use at least 75 percent less energy, and go 25 times longer, than incandescent lighting. It's an easy fix and not too pricey a switch to make. Of course, there's always teaching kids to turn off the lights and their devices (and it's never too early to do so). If you want to go big: Renewable energy companies are popping up with more affordable rates for solar, wind and hydropower, making it easier to get set up too. (There are tax benefits to going with renewables too).

8. Turn off the faucet!, like your dad used to say. As kids start to help with washing the dishes, brushing their own teeth or even taking showers it helps to teach them to turn off the water fauet so they can start eco-friendly habits early. Taking the time to explain to them why we need to conserve water helps them understand their part in all of it too.

Norman Mailer, I'm pregnant! This might be a memorable line from an equally memorable Gilmore Girls episode, but it's now also a reality for one of the show's stars because Milo Ventimiglia is expecting his first child! The actor married model and entrepreneur Jarah Mariano in the fall of 2023 at a tiny, private ceremony (a move that was very Jess Mariano of him), and on September 29, Jarah announced she's pregnant!

Jarah Mariano/Instagram

Jarah Mariano announced her pregnancy with an Instagram post featuring a surf session with Milo Ventimiglia. In the photos, Jarah is sitting on a surfboard wearing a brown bikini top, polka dot bikini bottoms, and a pink lei. "Baby on board!" she says in the caption.

After his time on Gilmore Girls, Milo played patriarch Jack Pearson on NBC's This Is Us, and told US Weekly in 2017 that "I think I’m built to want a strong family unit. “It will happen when it happens. I’m not out seeking it. It’s just kind of, I’m present in the space in my life that when it presents itself and it’s right, I’m sure it will work out.”

And it looks like it worked out at the exact right time.

Does Milo Ventimiglia have a wife?

Yes, Milo Ventimiglia & wife Jarah Mariano got married in the fall of 2023, and Jarah recently posted some new photos from the special day. "Last year I married my best friend," she says. "There aren’t enough words that exist to describe all the special qualities that make him who he is. AlI can say is that I am grateful for the life that we have together and the happiness that we have created🤍 Aloha wau iā 'oe my husband Milo."

"Things are good," Milo told Extra in February 2024. "We've had relationships that have come and have gone and then you get to a point where you kind of meet your match and meet someone that inspires you in a way different than anybody else...I'm grateful for her and I’m happy to have arrived in this moment, so married life is nice."

This year's celebrity breakups aren't slowing down anytime soon, and unfortunately, that includes Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner. Rumors about the couple's split began when TMZ reported that they were "heading" for divorce, and even though Joe posted a picture to his Instagram with his wedding band in full view on September 4, the couple later announced they're getting divorced.

"I can't imagine seeing this many rumors about my personal life," another said. "They keep so private and this is why."

From their red carpet debut to their engagement, the couple has chosen exactly what they wanted to announce — and what they want to keep private. "I’m in a relationship, but it’s a very private relationship," Sophie told The Sunday Times.

"I'm very protective of the life we've built...You never want to market yourself as a celebrity couple. It's not that cool," she tellsElle UK. "And my daughter never asked for any of this. I know what it can do to your mental health to be in this industry, and to be photographed every day and have the comments. It's not something I want her to deal with unless she says, 'This is what I want to do.' We're quite strict about that."

"When we started dating, I realized that I didn't have a ton of stuff that was just for me," Joe told MR PORTER. "And in the end, it makes me a better person to have something for myself."

However, the singer's privacy is more about about his loved ones than himself. “You’re protecting your family, your friends and those around you,” Joe told Entertainment Tonight. “You wanna be really protective over how much you wanna share in your personal life, and I feel like as artists, we get the opportunity to express our heart through our music, and so that’s where I’m personal and honest as I can be.”

A Timeline Of Joe Jonas And Sophie Turner's Relationship

Joe Jonas Slid Into Sophie Turner's DMs In 2016

"We had a lot of mutual friends, and they’d been trying to introduce us for a long time," Sophie told Harper's Bazaar in 2019. "We were following each other on Instagram and he direct-messaged me one fine day, out of the blue."

This is actually super similar to how Nick Jonas made the first move on his wife Priyanka Chopra Jonas! After finally meeting IRL and realizing they liked each other, Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner became exclusive in private before deciding to take their relationship public.

They Go Instagram Official In 2017

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - OCTOBER 15: (L-R) Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner attend 2nd Annual Academy Museum Gala at Academy Museum of Motion Pictures on October 15, 2022 in Los Angeles, California.

Sophie posted a photo of Joe smoking a cigar on a boat to Instagram on January 1, 2017, with "Miami daze" as the caption.

"You do feel like you’re living in a fishbowl," she told Marie Claire UK about celebrity life later that summer. "It’s frustrating [that] it’s the most mundane things that make the news – how boring! There are really no other headlines?"

They Get Engaged In The Fall Of 2017

By the time fall 2017 rolled around, the couple was madly in love and announced that they were engaged with matching Instagram posts (his reads "She said yes," and hers reads, "I said yes.")

"I think once you’ve found the right person, you just know," she told Rolling Stonein 2019.

They Get Married In 2019...Twice

BEVERLY HILLS, CALIFORNIA - MARCH 12: Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner attend the 2023 Vanity Fair Oscar Party Hosted By Radhika Jones at Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts on March 12, 2023 in Beverly Hills, California.

Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner got married in Las Vegas in May 2019. "We had to get legally married in the states, so we thought it'd be really fun to get all of our friends, invite them out, and do an impromptu wedding," Joe told GQ. "It kind of blew up in our faces because my parents called me the next morning and they were like, 'Did you just get married?' And I realized I told everybody, but I forgot to tell my parents."

However, it seems like Mr. and Mrs. Jonas were able to see the second round of nuptials, a more-private ceremony at the end of June 2019. The official ceremony took place at Le Château de Tourreau in Sarrians, France. Kevin and Nick Jonas were Joe's groomsmen, while Sophie's Game of Thrones costar (and BFF) Maisie Williams was her maid of honor.

Sophie Turner Gives Birth To Baby Willa In 2020

The internet was over the moon when Sophie was seen with a baby bump, and TMZ reported that the couple gave birth on July 22, 2020, before later revealing the baby's name is Willa.

"[They] are over the moon," a source told Entertainment Tonight at the end of July 2020. "The couple is already obsessed and can't stop gloating about their new addition. The couple is taking time to enjoy this special moment and have only shared the news and updates with family and friends."

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - MAY 02: (L-R) Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner attend The 2022 Met Gala Celebrating "In America: An Anthology of Fashion" at The Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 02, 2022 in New York City.

It's been a busy few years for both Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner. The Jonas Brothers released Happiness Begins in 2019, followed by this year's The Album, while Sophie starred in X-Men: Dark Phoenix, The Staircase, and Do Revenge. But unknown to the rest of the world, they were also getting ready for baby number two!

Sophie showed up to the May 2022 Met Gala cradling a baby bump, and then made her official pregnancy announcement in an Elle UK feature the next day. "The greatest thing in life is seeing my daughter go from strength to strength," she says in the interview. "We're so excited to be expanding the family. It's the best blessing ever."

In July 2022, People confirmed that the couple had welcomed their second daughter!

Joe Jonas And Sophie Turner Announce They're Getting Divorced

TODAY received an exclusive petition saying Joe Jonas has filed for divorce from Sophie Turner, and that their marriage is "irretrievably broken." He also states that the divorce is in the best interest of their daughters, and that the couple will "have shared parental responsibility" moving forward.

On September 6, the couple shared joint statements to their Instagram accounts. "After four wonderful years of marriage we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage," the statements read. "There are many speculative narratives as to why, but truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children."

Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner came to a new (temporary) agreement on where their kids would live after Sophie sued Joe for "wrongful retention" of their children in New York. According to new documentation, the two children will stay in New York, which both Joe and Sophie have consented to.

"After a productive and successful mediation, we have agreed that the children will spend time equally in loving homes in both the U.S. and the UK," Joe and Sophie said in a statement the week of October 11. Since the agreement legally lasts until January 7, the former couple will "jointly submit a status report letter" before December 23, according to the agreement.

On January 11, a new UK custody plan for Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner was approved, leading Sophie to drop last fall's wrongful retention claims on January 17 "with prejudice, and without attorneys’ fees, expenses, costs and/or disbursements awarded to either party."

Sophie Turner Gets Real About Motherhood Following Divorce From Joe Jonas

Sophie Turner/Instagram

Sophie Turner opened up about her role as the titular character in Joan, a new TV series, and shared how art is imitating life. "If I hadn’t been a mother, I don’t know if I would have been able to bring the same energy that I did into it," she said (via The Sunday Times). Though she mentioned it's not easy being a "single mother," some people took what she said out of context.

She wasn't talking about herself, but her character Joan's efforts to do the unseemly to have her child back in her life. Still, she clarified her comments via her Instagram stories so there's no confusion about her words. IMO, I don't think she needed to do that because being a mother is hard. Caring for children isn't just about candid Paparazzi or social media posts. When you're doing it by yourself or with a support village, it takes time, effort, consistency, repetition, and so much more!

Luckily she and Joe Jonas are able to have a situation where they're co-parenting so they can alternate between working and caring for them.

We're wishing Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner the best.

  • Kate Winslet revealed the tank from the final scenes of Titanic was only waist-deep, despite admitting director James Cameron wouldn't be happy with her spilling the beans.
  • Instead of treading water, Leonardo DiCaprio, "I'm afraid to say, was kneeling down," the actress said.
  • She also explained how the final half hour of the film is lopped because of how loud the water was while filming.

If you've been arguing that Jack could have fit on the door with Rose ever since Titanic premiered in 1998, then boy do I have an update for you. Turns out, Jack could have just stood up and walked to the life boats alongside everyone else because Kate Winslet just revealed the tank Leonardo Dicaprio and she filmed the infamous movie scene in was only waist-deep.

The scene in question comes near the end of the film, after the Titanic has hit the iceberg and a number of women and children have been evacuated onto the lifeboats. Jack and Rose (who stayed behind) are stranded in the ocean with nothing but a door to hold onto.

Speaking with Josh Horowitz during a92nd Street Y Q&A for her new movie Lee, The Holiday actress says, "well that was quite an awkward tank...because to burst the bubble, it was waist height at that time."

WHAT?! You're telling me after 25 years that Leo wasn't actually treading water? Yet another reason he deserved an Oscar. "Leo, I'm afraid to say, was kneeling down," she continues. "I shouldn't be saying anyways, [director James] Cameron's gonna be ringing me."

Since the tank was also an infinity take, "there was constant water rushing and you could hear the constant sound of water," she says. The final half hour or so is "entirely looped" because of how loud the sound of the water was.

Not only does this reframe the scene for viewers, but Winslet recalls it was actually pretty difficult to film with her costume. "First of all, I was regularly like, 'Can I just go for a pee?' And then I get up, get off the door, walk to the edge of the tank, sort of 20 feet away and I literally have to fling my leg over and climb up and come and get back on the door again. It's terrible."

20th Century Studios/Paramount Pictures

This isn't the first Titanic tidbit she's given us this year. In July, she revealed she did both her own makeup and Leo's for the movie's most iconic scene at the bow of the ship.

"This was a nightmare, shooting this," she says. "Because Leo couldn't stop laughing and we had to reshoot this about four times because [Cameron] wanted a very specific light for this, obviously, and the sunsets kept changing where we were...Now, what you wouldn't know, in [my costume] I've got his makeup and brushes and sponge, and my makeup and brushes and sponge in the other side. And between takes I was basically redoing our makeup."

Kate Winslet, actress and makeup artist extraordinaire. TBH, if I'd trust anyone to do my makeup it's Kate!

In between planning what to even do for Halloween this year, perfecting your signature witches' brew and transforming your Netflix queue into a Halloween movie must-watch list, Halloween is a fun and potentially time-consuming holiday.
