4 Common Habits That Are Ruining Your Productivity

You know that being super-productive is a key part of powering through your assignments, impressing your boss and creating a general sense of accomplishment in your career. That is, of course, if you can actually be productive when you’re at the office! Every day, you face potential efficiency saboteurs that can impede your progress, sometimes without you even realizing it. Here, Vicki Salemi, career expert for Monster, shares how you can kick these bad habits to the curb and prove to yourself just how much you can do.

1. Checking Facebook. Pretty much everyone does it, even if they don’t admit it. So what’s the big deal? There are two common scenarios. First, when you get wrapped up in the latest digital drama going down on your feed, you can lose track of time. Before you know it, 45 minutes have passed without you making an inch of progress on your work. On the other hand, if you just browse Facebook for bits of time when you’re bored, it can all still add up and make a dent in how much work you’ve put in. “Logging on throughout the day can really be detrimental to your productivity and concentration. My advice is to set aside your surfing for a specific time, like lunch,” said Salemi. “Then set a timer on your phone, and when it’s done, you’re done.”

2. Stopping by Your Work BFF’s Desk. Obviously, you need to chat with your work husband or wife, but a quick check-in can easily turn into a sprawling conversation about anything from office politics to where she got her adorable new boots. Keep your talks short and limit them to once or twice a day, depending on how much you have going on. And for extra credit, use that newfound time to skyrocket your work ethic by taking a walk! “This is my favorite tip to boost productivity,” says Salemi. “It doesn’t have to be long — 10 minutes can do the trick. You’ll return to your desk feeling refreshed.” This is another instance where a timer can come in handy, since you don’t want to go MIA for an hour because you were soaking up the last remnants of warm weather.

3. Constant Gchatting. If you think you can run what amounts to a seven-hour conversation with a friend while simultaneously focusing on work, here’s some tough news: Multitasking isn’t a thing. It’s one of those myths everyone likes to believe, like that any food you eat after two drinks at happy hour contains zero calories. Instead of forcing your brain to juggle, play to its strengths and focus on one thing at a time. “Create small time blocks to work on tasks,” said Salemi. “If you’re working on a project, literally break it down and document every single step in sequential order, and figure out how long it will take to complete each one.” Set that timer (after reading this list, maybe a timer will be your new office BFF?), get to work, then reward yourself with a little break before you get back at it.

4. Fussing Over Your To-Do List. This one’s especially sneaky because on its face, it seems like a good thing, especially after the recommendation above! At its core, being on top of your to-do list is a great way to make sure you’re delivering on all fronts. But if you become too focused on organizing it or making it perfect, it can actually become a vehicle of procrastination. If you find that itemizing every single thing you need to do is really just keeping you from, well, actually doing them, strip your to-do list down to basics. Then, at the end of each day, create what Salemi calls a “ta-da list” to prove just how much you were able to get done when you dove in instead of overthinking it.

  • Visualize success. Visualizing what you want out of your resolution will help you stay committed and motivated along the way.

Amid the tragedy of the LA fires, neighbors are opening their homes to one another. In addition to AirBnb offering temporary housing and various YMCAs and Red Cross locations opening their doors, victims are finding safety with friends and family — and that includes your favorite celebrities. Like Hilary Duff and husband Matthew Koma, who opened their home to Mandy Moore, Taylor Goldsmith, and their family.

Here's what Mandy Moore and Griffin Goldsmith have said about Hilary Duff and Matthew Koma — and the LA wildfires.

Despite losing everything, Griffin is touched by Hilary Duff & Matthew Koma.

After Mandy Moore and Taylor Goldsmith's home was affected by the wildfires in Altadena (they lost their garage, music studio, and back house), Mandy's brother-in-law Griffin Goldsmith revealed the family had been taken in by Hilary Duff.

"All of this so overwhelming," he said on Instagram. "Our dear friends @matthewkoma and @hilaryduff thought it wise to set up a gofundme for us to help with everything moving forward. Not to mention they are currently housing my brother’s family. They’ve taken care of my entire family from the moment this began. I will never be able to thank them adequately. This is the kindest act any human could do for another. They are the most beautiful, selfless people we’ve ever known."

"I’ve never been so moved in my life," he continues. "We are completely blown away. I can’t talk or think about it without crying. Like I said there aren’t words to describe how I feel. I’m doing my best. You all have completely changed what the picture of our future in Los Angeles looks like."

Mandy Moore shared the GoFundMe for Griffin and Kit on Instagram, writing in a since-deleted post that the couple "lost their home and everything they own in the Eaton Fire."

"With their first baby on the way in a matter of weeks, they need our support now more than ever," Mandy says (via People). "Griff is a touring musician and also lost his entire arsenal of drums/percussion he uses to make a living. It’s all so much. So many have asked how to help during this unimaginable and stressful time … Please consider donating and sharing to help them rebuild."

And when people criticized her decision to share the GoFundMe link? "Kindly F OFF."

"People questioning whether we’re helping out our own family or attributing some arbitrary amount of money Google says someone has is NOT helpful or empathetic," she continues. "Of course we are. Our buddy Matt started this GoFundMe and i’m sharing because people have asked how they can help them. We just lost most of our life in a fire too."

And the main part of Mandy Moore's home is still "mostly intact."

The Princess Diaries actress shared photos from her family's property, revealing that the main part of their home is still standing. "It’s not livable but mostly intact," she said on Instagram January 10. "We lost Taylor and griffin’s studio with every instrument and piece of equipment they’ve ever owned. We lost our garage and back house. Everyone we know lost everything. Every house on our street is gone. My in laws. My brother and sister in law- 6 weeks from welcoming their first baby. Our best friends. Feeling weird survivors guilt. We love this community and will do everything we can to help rebuild and support. Thanks for everyone for checking on us and offering us help. Altadena strong."

Here are five ways a mindfulness practice can help you build connection, boost your creativity, and grow your business:

Reduce stress. Mindfulness practices, such as meditation and deep breathing exercises, have shown to reduce stress and increase the feeling of relaxation. “I always prioritize my meditation practice,” says Maria. “Finding a balance is an ongoing effort, and though it’s not perfect, it’s definitely worth it.”

Make better decisions. When founders are more mindful, they become more attuned to their thoughts and emotions, helping them recognize when they’re reacting impulsively. Feeling clear-headed, calm, and ready to face the day can help you consider multiple perspectives, take the time to evaluate risks, and make strategic decisions for the long term vs. knee-jerk reactions that can cloud your judgment and affect the long-term success of your business.

Nurture your creativity. Your best ideas come from giving yourself the space to explore new ideas without the pressure to go, go, go all the time. Tap into your creativity by taking a midday walk, doing yoga, or just closing your eyes. “I nurture my creativity by hanging out with my daughter. We read, dance, and play together,” says Maria. Tapping into your innate creativity can lead to innovative solutions, product improvements, and fresh approaches to how you run your business.

Increase focus and productivity. A daily mindfulness practice can train your mind to stay focused on the task at hand rather than getting distracted by everything on your to-do list. This healthy focus time can lead to better productivity too, allowing you to accomplish more in less time and make more efficient use of your resources.

Improve communication and relationships. Being a great communicator is key to running a successful business. You may have employees, partners, or clients you need to communicate with clearly and calmly on a daily basis. “I have a deep appreciation for my co-founder,” says Maria. “We keep each other balanced and don’t mind talking shop during our downtime.”

Maria was one of 10 Selfmade members to enter the Selfmade pitch competition in her cohort. “Pitching our business through Selfmade has taught us the importance of introducing our target client and bringing her to life,” says Maria. “This helps people connect with her pain points and understand the potential solutions we offer.”

The color and detail of this traditional kitchen feels drab and dated. Instead, look for flat-panel or Shaker-style cabinets with clean, minimal lines.

This kitchen is a lesson is don'ts. The grey vinyl flooring (especially hideous!), farmhouse stools, and white cabinetry hail from a decades-old trend that needs to disappear in 2025.

5. Glass Mosaic Tiles

Glass mosaics, popular in the 2000s and 2010s, tend to lean toward a transitional aesthetic, which is the opposite of an organic, minimalist, or vintage-inspired design kitchen are craving now. The grout lines are bit difficult to clean too between all the tiny tiles. Zellige tile or a slab of marble are a more sophisticated look for today's kitchens.

6. Black & White

The stark contrast between black and white can come across as harsh and overly dramatic, a look that peaked in the 2010s. The farmhouse sign doesn't help warm it up either. Soften the look with earthy, natural tones.

7. Subway Tile

Subway tile is classic, so there’s no need to rip it out if it still brings you joy. However, the white subway tile paired with dark grout has overstayed its welcome. This overdone trend became so ubiquitous that it lost its charm and individuality, leaving kitchens looking more cookie-cutter than full of character.

This nod to the past needs to, sorry, stay in the past. Look for organic, natural forms and lighting that reflects your kitchen's unique aesthetic.
