This Kind of Stress Can Actually Be Good for You

Feeling stressed is generally a bad sign and can harm your health, whether you’re dealing with taxing work woes or fixating on a frustrating situation you simply can’t change. Surprisingly, though, the right kind of stress can actually benefit you. Naomi Whittel, author of New York Times bestselling book Glow15: A Science-Based Plan to Lose Weight, Revitalize Your Skin, and Invigorate Your Life($26), recently explained this phenomenon and also gave us some tips to help you pinpoint the type of stress you may be able to beneficially use in your own wellness routine.

According to Whittel, knowing the difference between different types of stress is the key. “There are two common types of stress: acute and chronic,” she explains. “Acute stress involves physical and emotional events, like feeling scared when you’re put on the spot at work or how you feel after running several sets of sprints. This is a good stress.” Chronic stress, on the other hand, persists over a longer period of time and can be harmful to your health. “Chronic stress might be long-term anxiety about your job, worries about money, frequent long-distance running, or exercising too much over a long period of time,” she notes. “While acute stress can provide many health benefits, chronic stress is the ugly stepchild; its proven harmful effects include causing depression, heart disease, obesity, and more.”

It might sound counterintuitive to learn how to use stress to stay healthy, but Whittel promises it can be done. She uses the “fight or flight response” to explain how the adrenaline that comes from acute stress can boost autophagy, a mechanism that helps your cells with a natural cleanup process. “This process (by which cells remove and recycle junk and repair damage) is for optimal function,” Whittel says. “Autophagy can decline as we age, but cellular stress can activate it, and that’s very good. It can keep you looking and feeling healthy.”

“By using good cellular stress to naturally boost autophagy, you can help your cells function better. In turn, you function better,” Whittel shares. “Here’s how it works: Autophagy is initiated when your cells lack nutrients, are deprived of energy, or are damaged in some way to activate a ‘stress response’ mechanism. When this happens, your cell action actually improves under the stress; and when your cellular processes are optimal, you look and feel better.” Whittel says benefits might include a productivity boost, more sound sleep, and an easier time maintaining or losing weight.

5 Ways to incorporate good stress into your life

1. Try intermittent fasting. “Not eating, or restricting caloric intake for a short period of time stresses your cells out, and this is a good thing,” Whittel says. “Short-term fasting (12-16 hours) has been shown to help you burn fat, boost brain power, and provide energy.” Want to give this one a go? Remember to always consult with your doctor before you alter your eating patterns or try any type of fasting.

I grew up with fat as the most abundant food in every meal I ate. My parents fed me the full – fat version of everything – yogurt, milk, meat… They were ahead of their time in understanding that fat’s not the enemy but our friend. In fact, not only did they believe in the virtues of fat but they also saw through the low-fat era for what it was – over-processed junk food disguised as health food. They raised me to trust in nature’s design – that if a food contained fat, there was likely an important reason. So we ate fat, a lot of it! My parents didn’t necessarily need me to have all the facts about why fat was important, they just wanted me to acknowledge it had value. . As I got older, my dad’s scientific mind rubbed off on me as I developed an intense curiosity about the connection between food, health, & beauty. I sought answers about why fat is necessary. I had noticed the positive role it played in some of my health issues & the way it made my skin feel & look as I entered my 40’s. . And even though for years dietary fat was positioned in our society as the biggest enemy to our health, I knew in my gut that the science would be astounding & prove otherwise. For starters, I learned that the fat in your food is not the same fat on your hips – it will not make you fat. Nor will it clog your arteries, and for that matter, it won’t raise your cholesterol either. It’s quite the opposite actually. The truth is, healthy fat in the right amount for your individual needs is absolutely essential to your health. . As a mother of four, I’ve made it a point to work hard to go against the grain on popular nutrition advice and instead encourage my four children to start the day the same way I did by eating full-fat breakfasts every day. My eldest child, Megan, has started with fat first since she was in a high chair. I served her avocado. And you guessed it – every morning for breakfast, she likes to add half of an avocado to whatever it may be that she eats, from eggs to fish to berries. Luckily for me, the rest of the children like to follow in their big sister’s footsteps & I know they are all on the path to a life filled with health & wellbeing.

2. Limit your protein intake. “Your body doesn’t make its own protein, so limiting your protein intake is a huge cellular stress,” Whittel says. “Again, this works because it forces your cells to find every possible way to recycle the existing protein you’ve already provided it, thereby activating autophagy.” Protein cycling, as Whittel explains it, has been shown to help reduce the risk of diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. “To limit your protein consumption, aim to eat less than 25 grams on the same three days you fast,” she suggests. “For example, on three non-consecutive LOW days (e.g., Monday, Wednesday, and Friday), fast for 16 hours (that includes sleeping hours!) and eat low protein (under 25 grams) for the remaining eight hours of the day. The other four days of the week are your nonrestricted HIGH days (so go ahead, indulge!).”

3. Exercise, but not too much. Overdoing it on exercise is never a good idea, but smartly scheduled, solid workouts can work wonders. “Autophagy rates increase when cells are under physiological stress, like when your heart is beating and your muscles are straining. This stress is positive as it has been shown to boost autophagy in your brain and muscle tissues,” she says. According to Whittel, all it takes is a minimal amount of exercise to give you maximum benefits. “Just 30 minutes of exercise has been shown to have profound autophagic effects,” she explains. “There are two great types of workouts to boost autophagy: HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) and RET (Resistance Exercise Training); you only need to exercise four days a week for no more than 30 minutes at a time.”

Having energy throughout the day isn’t just about how well you sleep; it also means that you do other things, as well. Eating well, activity, and keeping stress down also influence how you live and how you rest. In my life, I’ve found that two other easy practices have made me sleep better at night— and clear my mind and improve my performance during the day. I start the day with a short meditation and when I can, I squeeze in a short nap. . #Meditation has been shown to improve sleep, as well as to lower blood pressure and stress. Try doing it in the early morning when your BP and stress hormones are at the highest. I do it as soon as I wake up to clear my mind and get me started on my day. . In some circles, nap is as evil of a word as doughnut. That’s nonsense! We’re actually meant to have two sleep periods: the obvious long one at night and then another in the early afternoon, which is when our energy naturally dips lower than usual and we have a harder time focusing. This is why an afternoon nap can significantly increase mental alertness and improve mood. Keep it to 10 to 20 minutes, the ideal time that will help you awaken easily, and feel refreshed and recharged without feeling groggy. Set an alarm to make sure you don’t oversleep. . Contrary to what you might think, drinking a small cup of #AutophaTea or coffee right before you nap will not keep you up! In fact, it will give you more energy when you wake up, as it may help lessen the effects of sleep inertia. #Glow15

4. Indulge in the right treatments. As if we needed another excuse for a spa day! Whittel tells us that therapeutic mechanical stress — which causes minor trauma to cells in the skin and muscles — is another example of healthy stress that can elevate repair. “One of the most promising facial treatments for autophagy activation and youthful-looking skin is micro-needling,” she notes. Other treatments, such as a Thai massage, are good options too.

5. Turn up the heat. “Heat stress, which is achieved by exercising in temperatures above 86 degrees Fahrenheit to raise your core body temperature, boosts autophagy by activating genes that optimize heat shock proteins inside your cells,” Whittel says. “Adding heat to a workout is my go-to good stress.” Want to initiate heat shock while you work out? Try a hot yoga class, head outdoors for a short exercise session on a hot day, or raise your core temperature after exercise with a hot bath, trip to the sauna, or steam room visit. As always, make sure you’re properly hydrated and have consulted with a doctor when making any sort of change to your wellness routine.

When you're often the life of the party and happen to be partnered up and in your 30s, you'll instantly turn heads when you say no to booze. I can personally attest to the difficulty of this. As someone who loves happy hour and has a particular affinity for lemon drop shotsin totally inappropriate settings, there was no way I could get away with *not* drinking without inviting questioning looks.

Before I give you the guide to fake drinking when you're secretly pregnant, let me take this moment to make a PSA. If you see that a female friend of yours isn't drinking and she usually does, try not to ask her if she's expecting in front of everyone. She might be secretly pregnant, taking fertility drugs that can't be combined with alcohol, just trying to lower her dosage of alcohol with the hope that it helps her get pregnant. There's also the chance she might just be…not drinking. Be as it may, no one wants to be bombarded with pregnancy questions.

Of course, not everyone is going to take my PSA seriously, so I've got some tips and tricks for all you pre-reveal preggos. These same tips apply to gals who are not drinking because they are trying to conceive. I was personally in this non-drinking camp for about five months before getting pregnant.

And how's this for proof? I organized and attended a bachelorette party for two of my very best friends with about eight of my other besties present — and no one had ANY idea I was pregnant. So, trust me — I'm a bona fide pro at fake drinking.

Opt for canned beer

This was one of my earliest discoveries in the world of fake drinking. No one can see your drink when it's in a can. You might read that and think, yeah so? Well, take that can with you to the other can, and dump it out in the sink. Fill it up with water and no one will be the wiser. In fact, they'll think — wow, she's really blasting through those Coors Lights. Pro tip: Be sure to wipe any water drips off the can before you leave the bathroom, and rinse the sink so there's no errant beer foam floating around.

If you have to order a real drink, choose a clear cocktail. This is the classic move. You creep over to the bar when no one else is around, and order a club soda with lime. Think of it as a mocktail. Be sure to ask the bartender to serve it to you in a cocktail glass — a giant water glass or plastic cup is a dead giveaway.

If it's impossible to get alone time at the bar, order a vodka soda (or gin and tonic). Then take it to the bathroom, dump out the liquid (use a straw to keep the ice and any garnishes in the cup), then fill it with water instead. Complain about the soda or tonic being flat if anyone questions your drink's lack of tiny bubbles.

Make friends with bartenders. At first, bartenders give you a bit of side-eye when you ask for a club soda in a cocktail glass. They won't ask you what the deal is, but you can let them assume what they like — especially when you order that second or third club soda in a cocktailglass.

If you're feeling cavalier, and you and the bartender have really hit your stride, you can even say, “I'll take anything non-alcoholic that looks like a cocktail." I actually made SUCH good friends with a bartender at a wedding where I was fake drinking that every time I came over to the bar, he immediately winked at me and gave me “my regular." My friends guffawed at the fact that I was already friends with the bartender. Pro.

Allude to a possible tannin allergy. Wine is the toughest thing to fake, so don't even try. Tell your friends about how, out of nowhere, you've started to get headaches immediately after drinking a glass of wine. When they're like, “Is it just when you drink red?" reply with a frustrated sigh, “No, both red and white make me feel crappy — maybe it's a tannin thing?" Then get your faux canned beer or clear mocktail, and call it a day.

Ginger ale is a GREAT substitute for Champagne. Ginger ale looks like Champagne, it smells kind of like Champagne, and if your friends are tipsy enough and take a sip, they'll actually believe that it IS Champagne. Don't overdo this one though — too much sugary soda is not a good thing for you and your secret babe!

Rosee Canfield for Brit + Co

Pretend to be getting over a cold (so no one asks for a sip). After all, it's sick season! [Insert fake coughs here]

Rosee Canfield for Brit + Co

Always be the one to order or serve a round of shots. Shots are one of the toughest things to fake. Like, really difficult. And you might be thinking, who still takes shots anyway? Well, the answer is: I do. Or rather, I did. It would have been impossible to be at my two besties' bachelorette party without at least one round of shots. So what's a preggo to do? Serve 'em up, of course.

Because shots are best served as a surprise to inspire a second wind in any given party, you can creep into the kitchen to set things up. Pour all but one, and fill that one with a substitute. Ideally, it looks like what you're serving, and if that's not possible, make 3-5 of them vodka shots including yours, which is actually… water! If ordering shots at a bar, you're probably already friends with the bartender, so just ask him to make yours a fake one and to put a napkin or coaster under it on the tray that comes out.

Rosee Canfield for Brit + Co

Keep a drink in your hand at all times. This is an obvious one, but it's worth mentioning. If you don't have a drink on hand, someone will either hand you one or give you a hard time for not drinking. DO NOT give them that opportunity ;)

Rosee Canfield for Brit + Co

Never leave your drink unattended. Hopefully, you already have this rule in your wheelhouse from your college days. In this case, the key here is avoiding two things: friendly refills and someone accidentally picking up your drink and finding out it's phony.

Rosee Canfield for Brit + Co

Avoid being the first one to hit the hay. If you've already been squirreling around on the beverage front, the next clear sign that you might be secretly pregnant is when you're the first one to go to bed. So don't do that. Don't go to bed. Ever! Okay, at some point you'll need to go to bed because you need a TON of sleep in your first trimester, but avoid being the first party pooper at all costs.

And don't use getting up early “for a run" or “to do some work" as an excuse for going to bed — friends that know you will see right through that.

And there you have it, all you need to know about being a fake party animal when you're in the very early stages of expecting. Cheers! (But fake cheers, obvs.)

Jeremy's on-screen romance turned IRL.

Photos of Jeremy and co-star Molly Gordon (who plays his love interest, Claire, in The Bear) obtained by People show things heating up between the two. The duo had their arms wrapped around each other as they embraced for a kiss. This is the first time we've seen them both linked romantically, and we're honestly shocked and left wondering what happened with Rosalía, who he was going steady with in fall 2023.

October 25, 2024: Jeremy Allen White & Molly Gordon Spark More Rumors

A month after Jeremy Allen White and Molly Gordon were seen locking lips in Los Angeles, Peoplesnagged more photos of the two as they enjoyed a nice walk in NYC. They look cozy in their casual fall outfits — complete with matching burgundy hats — and were all smiles. They've yet to confirm anything though, but they have all the makings of a budding romance that could be serious!

October 31, 2024: Jeremy Allen White & Molly Gordon Are Taking It Slow

And on Halloween, we learned just how much Jeremy and Molly are enjoying taking it slow with their relationship. "Jeremy and Molly have been seeing each other quietly for a few months and are happy together," a source told ET. “They are enjoying their relationship, but also trying to keep it private. They don’t like attention surrounding their personal lives and it has been an adjustment for Molly."

November 26, 2024: Molly Gordon & Jeremy Allen White Spotted At Cozy Dinner

It's no surprise that Jeremy Allen White and Molly Gordon would pick a delicious restaurant for dinner in NYC. After all, they are on The Bear. DeuxMoi spotted them at The Corner Store in New York right before Thanksgiving. We all need a break from holiday prep in the kitchen — even celebs!

Scroll on for a deeper look into all of Jeremy's recent romantic escapades!

Jeremy Allen White's Steamy Dating History

First, there were the Jeremy Allen White and Selena Gomez dating rumors.

An anonymous submission to DeuxMoi at the beginning of July 2023 set off speculation that the two A-listers were “in touch.” The tip noted that Selena and Jeremy had allegedly met at a Vanity Fair cover shoot and hit it off ever since.

The gossip was neither proved wrong *or* right, though in hindsight, it didn’t hold up too strongly. Not long after rumors began circulating, the Haim sisters posted on Instagram about "single summer," picturing Selena alongside a Taylor Swift-backed girl gang.

Then, a big PDA fest with Ashley Moore.

Things were steaming up on the streets of Los Angeles when Jeremy Allen White was spotted engaging in some serious PDA with model and actress, Ashley Moore in August 2023. How they met is a total mystery, but seeing them together via paparazzi pictures was jaw-dropping – especially considering Mr. White was seen with his estranged wife and kids the week prior. Yikes!

Next, Jeremy publicly thirsting over Alexa Demie.

He’s at it again! In August 2023, Jeremy Allen White scrolled past a video highlighting Alexa Demie’s new campaign with Calvin Klein and did what any fan would do – he left a comment (though minimal): “Wow.”

To publicly show his affection (or rather, attraction) via Instagram is a whole thing in itself. King.

In fall 2023, Jeremy Allen White and Rosalía were going steady.

“Rosalía and Jeremy Allen White have recently started dating,” a source told Us Weekly in November 2023. “They started out as just friends, but things have turned romantic recently.”

Alexa, play "That Should Be Me" by Justin Bieber!

The duo had been sighted side-by-side a few times. TMZ shared photos of them together at a late-October 2023 farmer's market and even sharing a smoke break in a parking lot. Romantic!

That budding romance came after what we call White’s hot boy summer – he was out and about on the streets of Los Angeles amidst his separation from actress Addison Timlin. Throughout their divorce, White was rumored to be involved with Selena Gomez, thirsting over Alexa Demi on Instagram, and was publicly spotted smooching Ashley Moore.

Kevin Winter / Getty Images

Despite all of this, Jeremy was spotted being friendly with his divorced ex.

In what TMZ was calling "the friendliest divorce ever," Jeremy Allen White and his now-ex Addison Timlin had been seen doing family activities together amid his romantic antics. The pair shares two young daughters, which is likely why they're still seeing each other from time to time. Where Jeremy's head is, we can't say for sure, but we do know he's out there acting young, wild, and free.

We usually associate temper tantrums with toddlers or kids who can't get their way. While that may be true to a degree, I've since learned they can also be the result of kids having a hard time processing their emotions. So, what if I told you some adults don't know how to do that either? It seems there's reasons why having your own meltdown isn't such a bad thing, according to licensed psychotherapist Madeleine Phelan, LMSW of Madison Square Psychotherapand licensed clinical social worker + therapist Michelle Hession of Key Counseling Group.

Hession actually utilizes Internal Family Systems (IFS) at her private practice which doesn't look at adult tantrums in a negative way. Instead, it's often "judged by other models," according to her. "From an Internal Family Systems (IFS) perspective, adult tantrums can be a healthy way to release built-up stress when done mindfully," she says. She adds, "These outbursts are often a sign that parts of us feel overwhelmed, unheard, or unseen. When we express that energy — whether through yelling into a pillow, stomping our feet, or shaking it out — it can instantly reduce stress and help reset our nervous system."

From discussing the benefits of having one to outlining safe ways you can openly express your emotions, they have all the helpful details about giving yourself permission to emote.

Learn why adult tantrums don't have to be a bad thing!

1. Have something go seriously wrong at work? A quick (& private) adult tantrum can help you express those emotions.

Andrea Piacquadio

Even if you're one of the lucky people who love their job, nothing indicates things will go smooth sailing every day. Some times projects fall through because of miscommunication, misunderstandings, or a vindictive co-worker who looks to throw you under the bus every chance they get. Either way, it's sure to stir up big feelings that you may not know how to properly deal with.

As much as you may be trying to avoid this, having an adult 'tantrum' may be the very thing you need to do. Phelan says, "A tantrum can be a quick way to release pent-up frustration or anger."

2. Saw something crazy on your drive to Target? Adult tantrums actually help reduce cortisol in the body!

Anastasia Shuraeva

We've all had a front row seat to another driver's reckless behavior in traffic that's left us feeling rattled. We may have begun to grip our steering wheels even tighter despite developing sweaty palms. By the time we make it to our destination, we're likely on edge and in fight-or-flight mode. But instead of holding that energy in, Phelan suggests releasing it. "Releasing emotions and moving energy helps to regulate the nervous system and alleviate tension in the body," she says.

3. Journaling not your thing? Adult tantrums totally count as another way to express what's on your mind.

Ann poan

if you're not a fan of utilizing journal prompts or checking in with yourself, you may not know why you feel so upset about something. This can cause you to feel sad one minute and agitated the next. However, allowing yourself to have meltdowns can help you figure out what's bothering you so much.

Phelan says, "They can help clarify underlying emotional needs or frustrations." Not only that, but she says there's a reason why tantrums happen in the first place. "When we reach the point of having a tantrum, things have often been bubbling under the surface for some time, so reaching this breaking point can be a sign that something internal is needed our attention or to be expressed."

4. Did your partner make another passive-aggressive comment? An adult tantrum can help you figure out why you haven't talked to them about how that hurts your feelings!

August de Richelieu

While this is just an example of a way that you need to set boundaries, it's still a valid one that some people can unfortunately relate to. I'm currently saying a silent prayer for my 19-year-old self who dealt with a passive-aggressive partner.

Antoni Shkraba

But, are there healthy ways to have an adult tantrum?

According to Phelan, yes! I know this contradicts everything we've been taught in our communities about tantrums, but they don't have to look like the outbursts we've seen on social media. In her honest opinion, here are 5 ways to express yourself:

  1. In Private: Choose a safe, quiet place to express emotions.
  2. Physical Movement: Engage in activities like stomping, shaking, or throwing a pillow to physically move the stagnant, stuck energy.
  3. Breathing & Grounding: Use deep breathing or grounding exercises to manage intensity and release pent up emotions.
  4. Vocal Release: Scream into a pillow or use sound for catharsis.
  5. Journaling: Write down the intense emotions to release them without acting out.

Alex Green

Similar to Phelan's suggestions, Michelle also shares her top tips for having a "productive" tanrum:

  • Find a private, judgment-free space.
  • Use physical movement like stomping or shaking.
  • Let emotions out vocally, but intentionally (a sigh or growl works better than a scream).
  • Set a timer for just a few minutes.
  • Reflect afterward: What does that part of you need?

In Michelle’s words:
"Set a timer, yell into a pillow, and ask yourself: What does this part of me need? (Just don’t scare your kids or get fired from your job!)”

SHVETS production

Just because tantrums aren't horrific doesn't mean we're giving you a pass to be rude to others or have them whenever you want. Phelan warns, "They're inappropriate in certain settings, such as work environments and public places. They are also of course inappropriate if they involve harming yourself or others in any way." Hession says something similar in that she wants you to "avoid tantrums in public, around children, or at work" because "they can cause misunderstandings or even harm." It goes without saying, but violence is never the answer!

Also, Phelan and Hession want you to pay attention to how often you're using this as a way to calm down. "If tantrums become a consistent occurrence, healthier coping strategies are needed and therapy is a great place to start learning them," she suggests. Hessions feels that recurrent tantrums "may indicate unresolved trauma that's worth exploring in therapy."

Basically, therapy is always a great idea!

The final verdict? The occasional adult tantrum is okay, but don't rely it as you go-to method of regulation and expression every time you're struggling with your emotions!

Get ready for another year of mayhem, because Squid Game season 2 is on its way! The Netflix K-drama / thriller captivated — and horrified — viewers when it premiered on Netflix in 2021, and we are more than ready to see more. And considering it became Netflix's most-watched series, and was so popular it led to comfy Halloween costumes and reality competition Squid Game: The Challenge, we're not alone.

Here's everything you need to know about the Squid Game season 2 release date, cast, and more!

Watch the Squid Game season 2 trailer!

Let the games begin! The Squid Game season 2 trailer brings a whole new set of games to our favorite players, and it's totally reminding me of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. We'll have to wait until December to see whether Gi-hun is really able to bring down the games once and for all.

When is the Squid Game season 2 release date?

Noh Juhan/Netflix

Squid Game season 2 will premiere December 26, 2024. I guess nothing says Christmas like murder and giant, terrifying dolls. Creator Dong-hyuk reportedly took 10 years to write the first season of the hit series, but we're glad it didn't take him that long this time around!

What is Squid Game season 2 about?

Noh Juhan / Netflix

The first season of Squid Game followed contestants chosen to participate in the titular games, a competition that features deadly versions of childhood games. And this time around, Gi-hun is doing everything in his power to take the game down, even if it means "starting another life-or-death game with new participants gathered to win the prize of 45.6 billion," according to an official synopsis.

"As we all saw at the end of season 1, the main plot of season 2 will be revenge," actor Lee Jung Jae tells All K-Pop. "The key figure who controlled the workings of the games in season 1 was Lee Byung-Hun...it seems that the two of us will be the central figures of this next story."

While season 1 was all about surviving the games, it appears that Squid Game season 2 could be all about bringing them down.

Who is in the Squid Game season 2 cast?

Noh Juhan / Netflix

Netflix announced the cast of Squid Game season 2 in June 2023. In addition to the return of Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo, we'll also see some new characters including Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon, and Yang Dong-geun.

Is Squid Game: The Challenge Season 2 of Squid Game?

Netflix

Squid Game: The Challenge is a competition show inspired by the world of Squid Game. According to the official synopsis from Netflix, the 456 players are all playing familiar and new games and "their strategies, alliances, and character will be put to the test while competitors are eliminated around them."

The winner of Squid Game: The Challenge season 1 is Mai Whelan, while the winner of the fictional Squid Game contest is Seong Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae).
