This App Will Help You Get In Touch With Your Emotions

woman on phone

How are you? This question seems simple enough, right? And one that many of us encounter on a daily basis.

But how often do we actually take the time to check in with ourselves and ask: How am I really feeling? The truth is, the answer can be surprisingly complex. From moment to moment, our emotions can vary greatly, culminating in a kaleidoscope of feelings throughout a single day. We recently discovered How We Feel, a wellness app that helps us keep track of these feelings, and we can't stop using it.

If you want to get to the bottom of your emotions, tracking them can be incredibly powerful. By monitoring our moods over time, we can start to spot patterns and recognize what triggers certain feelings—allowing us to gain insight into our emotional intelligence. Plus, understanding how we’re feeling also helps us make better decisions and respond more appropriately in any given situation.

Next time someone asks "How are you?", don't just answer with "I'm fine." Take the time to really ask yourself: How am I doing today? And then get to the bottom of your feelings with the help of How We Feel.

How We Feel was founded by Ben Silbermann (co-founder of Pinterest) and Dr. Marc Brackett (Founding Director, Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence). I got a chance to sit down with the duo just on the heels of the announcement that they werethis year's App Store's "Cultural Impact" Award. When asked about their mission and impact, their energy was visible and contagious.

"We hope to create a more emotionally literate world," said Silbermann and Brackett. "That means showing that it's ok to talk about your feelings, even when they are unpleasant. It means encouraging people to approach their own and others' emotions with curiosity, not judgment. And it means teaching people healthy strategies to deal with the twists, turns, and speed bumps we all will encounter."

Courtesy of How We Feel

Tracking our feelings isn't something new. However, what makes How We Feel unique is that its intuitive design allows us to log and reflect on our moods in unprecedented ways.

"Designing a simple and beautiful interface to navigate through all the different emotions was really tough. There isn’t a “visual language” for emotions. Should we use emojis? Words? Shapes? We tried lots of different iterations before we landed on the colorful shapes you see in the app today. It was a very tight collaboration between our scientists, designers, and engineers."

This sleek emotional well-being journal gives you the digital tools to capture and make sense of your feelings so that you can better understand yourself. And what's more, it introduces tailored activities you can implement in real-time to help you feel more in control of your life.

"We all hear that technology is harming emotional well-being. For example, we know that social media can make young people feel less-than and anxious. But we also think that technology can be part of the solution! How We Feel takes advantage of the fact that your phone is always with you. This means that we can ask you how you’re feeling in the moment, rather than relying on your memory of an event. It also means we can give anyone access to very high-quality resources for free!"

Want to start mapping your moods? Here are 10 ways checking in with your emotions can help improve your life:

  1. Recognize triggers: Keeping tabs on your moods can help you spot patterns and recognize what triggers certain feelings.
  2. Make smarter decisions: Knowing how you’re feeling can help you make more informed decisions, especially when it comes to situations that require a lot of thought.
  3. Be kinder to yourself: By understanding how you feel, you can start taking action to be more compassionate towards yourself and others.
  4. Build emotional resilience: When we know our emotions better, we are better equipped to cope with the ups and downs in life without getting too overwhelmed or discouraged about them.
  5. Respond more effectively: If you’re aware of your emotions, you can respond to them in a way that is more helpful and constructive.
  6. Be present: When we focus on our emotions, we are better able to be present in the moment and savor them instead of letting them pass us by.
  7. Improve relationships: When we have a better handle on our emotions, we can relate to others more effectively and build healthier relationships.
  8. Enhance creativity: Mapping your moods can help improve your creative thinking by giving you greater insight into the ebbs and flows of your ideas and inspiration.
  9. Boost productivity: By monitoring how you feel, you can adjust your work habits and environment to suit different moods and get more done.
  10. Promote health and wellbeing: Tracking your emotions can help you build better self-care practices that reflect your overall well-being.

Overall, checking in with ourselves is one of the most fundamental skills we can develop when it comes to living an emotionally healthy life. So the next time someone asks you "How are you?", answer from an informed place and let How We Feel help you get there.

Last year, some of us celebrated the holidays apart from our families for the first time. COVID has brought with it many changes, some of them arguably positive (like increased flexibility to work from home), some difficult (such as the realization of vastly different political and social views between family and friends), and some horrible (obviously, the health implications of a global pandemic). However, for some of us, celebrating the holidays without family members isn't exclusively due to COVID. In addition to so many of us living in different areas than our families of origin, some of us simply don't have close bonds with the people we grew up around. Sometimes, this can cause loneliness.

If you're not close with your family members, the holidays can be a difficult time. This is doubly true if you don't have a close circle of friends to call upon. But make no mistake, if this sounds like your situation, you're not alone — there are thousands of other people going through the same struggles you are. We sat down with Irad Eichler, founder of Circles, a website that connects people who are sharing similar struggles, like heartbreak, grief, or loneliness. Here are some of Eichler's tips for coping — and even thriving! — during the holiday season when you're not planning on spending it with your family, for one reason or another.

Don't Fall For "Perfect Families" On Social Media

Laura Chouette

The first VERY important step to having a joyous holiday season when you're going it alone is to stop believing the narrative that others' family situations are perfect, Eichler says.

"Remember people only post a moment in time, and only the moments when they look their happiest and best."

In addition to the fact that everything you see on social media is curated for the 'gram, it's also important to remember that by focusing on what others have and you lack, you risk failing to see the great things at play in your own life.

"These holiday periods can become a time of focusing on who and what we don't have, rather than who or what we do, and can cause a negative spiral into depressing and dreadful feelings of inadequacy," says Eichler.

Gratitude is the reason for the season, after all. So instead of only seeing the negative, try some gratitude journal prompts to help you focus on what's actually really wonderful about your life right now.

Make An Effort To Deepen New Connections

Joel Muniz

While it may seem like everyone has friends and family to spend time with during the holiday season, that doesn't mean no one is available for deepening a blossoming relationship or new friendship.

"Make a list of people you can or would like to connect with, and try to reach out to at least one of them," advises Eichler.

Reaching out doesn't have to mean a big plan or an hour-long conversation. Even a quick text letting a friendly coworker know you're thinking about them can go a long way toward deepening the relationship and moving it in the direction of closer friendship.

Don't have an acquaintance in mind? Then it's time to make new acquaintances. What's more in line with the Christmas spirit than attending a Meetup or event full of people eager to make new friends?

"Join groups with similar interests to yours, such as hiking, baking, or games. Push your boundaries and be brave - you might find new people who have much in common with you."

Give Back

Priscilla Du Preez

The holiday season is a great time to focus on giving back to your community, and coincidentally, acts of generosity and kindness are known to reduce loneliness and help people feel happier. One study found that knowing a few of your neighbors and doing small acts of kindness for them — such as cheering them up, listening to them, mowing their lawn, providing advice about local business recommendations and job opportunities, and chatting over the fence — was statistically correlated with feeling less lonely and having a lower risk of depression.

Helping out elderly neighbors can be a particularly gratifying way to give back.

"Notice older lonely people in your neighborhood or community who might have no family at all, and offer to help them," says Eichler. "These can become mutually meaningful connections, and help you 'adopt' a grandparent."

Connect With Others Online

Thought Catalog

Finally, use the Internet for its highest and best purpose: to connect people. Whether you're using Meetup to find in-person events, digital forums for having conversations about special interests, or programs like Circle for getting support from others in your situation, the opportunities to create new connections are practically endless.

"There are many interest groups that can be found digitally, where or any person can connect with others in the same life stage, going through the same challenges, or who would like to explore the same interests," Eichler states. "Meaningful connections can be formed easily in these circumstances. The Internet enables us to find and connect to people all over the world who fit this, and to whom we can become more easily attached, as we are able to find people with the exact interests that energize us."

Pretty Woman is an iconic movie, full stop — and almost nothing is more iconic than Julia Roberts and Richard Gere's spicy piano scene. You know the one. Well, Richard Gere just spilled on that sensual scene over 30 years later, and what he shared is pretty surprising! Here's what he had to say on the TODAY Showabout that moment!

Everything Richard Gere said about his iconic performance in Pretty Woman's piano scene!

www.youtube.com

- YouTube

If you don't exactly remember the scene, let me break it down for you. Edward Lewis (Richard Gere) is dressed to the nines, playing the piano in the hotel he's staying at. When Vivian (Julia Roberts) enters the scene, Edward dismisses the hotel staff so he can have the room alone with Vivian. She makes her way to him, he takes off her dress, and well...that piano becomes the scene of a very intimate moment between these two.

WELL, according to Richard, that scene was improvised completely. Shocked? Yeah, we were too.

Richard explained that he and director Gary Marshall were looking for ways to make Edward "a little more interesting" by chatting about what the character would do while he travels for work. It was Richard's idea that he would find a piano late at night to play while his only audience would be a cleaning guy or two.

They decided to run with the idea, and boom! We got one of the most memorable romance scenes of all time.

Not only was the entire scene improvised, but Richard also shared that he improvised the song he played as well. He even got a "composed by" credit for the tune! Sadly, when people ask him to play the song for them, he can't seem to remember what he made up! To him, he "just played."

We wish we could "just play" our way into the cinema zeitgeist forever like that! Bravo, Mr. Gere! 👏

As we head into 2025, wellness is not just about personal health, but also the spaces we live in. The latest trends in wellness focus on a holistic approach that balances the body, mind, and your environment. From smart technologies to ancient healing practices, these 15 wellness trends are set to transform how we care for ourselves and our homes. Whether you’re looking to improve your mental health, your physical well-being, or simply create a more nurturing space, these trends will help you kick off the new year with a healthier, more balanced lifestyle.

Bio-Hacking

Kaboompics.com

Biohacking trends like tracking sleep, nutrition, and exercise; using nootropics or cognitive enhancers; and practicing intermittent fasting are helping people optimize their health and wellness, and potentially their life span. According to a recent McKinsey report, more than 60 percent of people have said it’s extremely or very important to purchase longevity products, and 70 percent are planning to buy more products in the future. Wearables in the fitness industry are continuing to drive this trend, and allowing more people to turn their healthcare into a lifestyle, rather than waiting for an annual checkup. People are also using at-home diagnostic tools and e-health services to manage their health at home.

Gentle Workouts

Scarlett Alexandra DeGregorio

High-impact exercises can often leave our bodies feeling strained. By incorporating gentle exercise into your fitness routine, you allow your body to move in a way that reduces stress and tension. Workouts like yoga, pilates, or walking, help you become more in tune with your breathing and heart rate, which helps you feel calm. It's a great way to reach your 2025 fitness goals while also improving your mental health.

Digital Detoxing

Darina Belonogova

The constant need to check emails, texts, and social media has led to burnout and stress. The American Psychological Associations' Stress in America survey found that a fifth of U.S. adults cited technology use as a significant source of stress in their life. Constantly being plugged in can affect both our mental and physical health. Taking a conscious break from screens to reconnect with ourselves and others will become a necessity come 2025. Whether it’s an hour a day or a weekend getaway, we allow our minds to rest and reduce the overwhelming feeling caused by information overload.

Wellness Gardens

Billie Lentz

Wellness gardens are the perfect escape from the bustle of daily life, and can promote health and wellness with thoughtfully curated elements like aromatic plants, water features, and comfortable seating. Greenery, soothing sounds, and sitting outdoors in nature can encourage you to be more mindful and less stressed while homegrown food, herbs, and edible flowers nourish you for the season.

Light Therapy

Jemilla Mills-Smith

An estimated 10 million Americans are affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), according to Psychology Today. Designing your home for better natural light, especially in winter, can help regulate the body’s circadian rhythm, improving sleep quality and energy levels. Use sheer curtains in active spaces like the kitchen, living room, and home office, and open up blinds to allow as much natural light in, stimulating vitamin D production to keep bone health and immune function in check. Mentally, natural light has been shown to boost mood, reduce stress, and alleviate symptoms of depression by increasing serotonin levels. It can also improve focus, productivity, and creativity while you work. For long winter nights, invest in a light therapy lamp too.

At-Home Saunas

Wayfair

At-home saunas are the latest self care status symbol and will continue to trend into 2025 as they become more affordable (this portable sauna from Target is only $150!). Sauna blankets are also trending and help offer so many health benefits, including improved circulation, detoxification through sweating, and relaxation of muscles and joints. A regular sauna routine can help reduce stress, promote better sleep, and boost heart health. The heat is also good for skin and your body's recover post-workout. Community saunas and bathhouses are also gaining in popularity, especially among younger generations who prefer the social aspect.

Wellness Journaling

Hannah Newberry

Wellness journaling helps you track your physical, emotional, and mental well-being. By documenting your daily habits, moods, and goals, you can start to see patterns, manage stress, and focus mindfulness and on your personal growth. Check out this Papier journal for tracking your 2025 wellness goals.

Smart Indoor Air Monitors

Mikhail Nilov

Improving indoor air quality is so important for a healthy home. According to the EPA, Americans, on average, spend approximately 90 percent of their time indoors, where the concentrations of pollutants can be 2 to 5 times higher than they are outdoors. Open windows when possible or use air purifiers with HEPA filters to reduce allergens, dust, and pollutants. Houseplants like snake plants and spider plants can also help purify the air naturally. Regularly clean and vacuum to keep dust mites and mold at bay, and avoid using harsh chemical cleaners that release volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Invest in a smart air quality monitor to give yourself peace of mind.

Water Filtration Systems

Ron Lach

Home water filtration is becoming a vital wellness trend, as people seek cleaner, safer drinking water. Advanced filtration systems remove contaminants like chlorine, lead, and bacteria, and eco-conscious designs, such as reverse osmosis and carbon filters, improve water quality while reducing our reliance on bottled water. Shower filtration systems are a great way to keep chlorine, heavy metals, and other impurities out of your tap water, which can cause dryness, irritation, and dullness. Have dry skin or scalp? Shower filters help maintain skin’s natural moisture barrier and can be gentler on sensitive skin.

Sleep Divorcing

A sleep divorce, when you sleep in separate beds or rooms to get a better night's sleep, can save your marriage. While it may sound extreme, many couples find that it improves both their sleep and relationship. Snoring, differing sleep schedules, or constant tossing and turning can keep you and your partner up all night, leading to fatigue and irritability (never great for communication). Sleep divorce is about prioritizing your health and theirs, and many couples report feeling more refreshed, connected, and happier in their relationships as a result. Not ready for a sleep divorce? Try this Scandinavian sleep method.

Dry Brushing

Vlada Karpovich

I always think of Gwyneth Paltrow when I think of dry brushing. She showed us during her typical Goop-inspired shower routine that she never takes a shower without one. It simply involves brushing your skin with a natural-bristle brush to exfoliate dead cells and stimulate circulation. It can help improve skin texture, unclog pores, and promote lymphatic drainage, which supports detoxification. Regular dry brushing may reduce the appearance of cellulite, increase energy, and leave the skin feeling smoother and more refreshed. For best results, brush before your shower for max benefits.

Functional Foods

Cora Pursley

Functional foods are nutrient-rich foods that provide health benefits beyond basic nutrition — so foods filled with vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants, or probiotics to support digestion, boost immunity, or reduce inflammation. Examples include fermented foods like yogurt and kimchi, which promote gut health, or fatty fish like salmon, rich in omega-3s, which support heart health. Next time you food shop, look out for these foods and incorporate them into daily meals to enhance your overall wellness and help prevent chronic health conditions.

Sexual Health

Ketut Subiyanto

Sexual wellness is becoming less taboo for 2025. As conversations around sexual health become more normalized, products and services like sex education, therapy, and health-enhancing products will become more accessible. Trends include the rise of personalized sexual health solutions, such as tailored supplements and tech-enabled devices for a better sex life. Platforms offering education, therapy, and community support will also grow, empowering us to explore our sexual wellness in a holistic, shame-free way.

Wild Swimming

Büşranur Aydın

Water wellness, a growing trend in 2025, emphasizes the health benefits of hydration and water-based therapies, like hydrotherapy (hot baths, cold plunges, steam rooms) to relieve pain, improve circulation, and reduce stress. Float therapy (a float tank filled with Epsom salt water), mineral baths using magnesium and sulfur to detoxify the body, and swimming in hot springs for relaxation, muscle tension relief, and improving circulation are giving rise to the therapeutic benefits of our natural waters.

Modern Pilgrimaging

Spencer Wirkkala

Modern pilgrimages, where you or you with a group travel to a sacred or meaningful site, nature retreat, or cultural landmark, with an emphasis on mindfulness, inner growth, and personal transformation, are forecasted to grow in 2025 as more people seek community and the great outdoors. Many people seek these experiences as a way to disconnect from daily routines, practice meditation, or explore new spiritual perspectives.

Steven Spielberg a certified movie star-maker, but when he works with celebrities who are already established in their own right? The movie's sure to be a smash. ICYMI, Josh O'Connor (Challengers, Knives Out 3) and Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada, Oppenheimer) just joined Spielberg's newest movie from Universal, and I lost. My. Mind. I've been a fan of Josh's since before he was on The Crown in 2019, and as much as I'd like to gatekeep him, I'm thrilled to see him getting the accolades — and roles — he deserves.

Keep reading for everything you need to know about Steven Spielberg's new movie — and who's joining Josh O'Connor & Emily Blunt in the cast.

Jeff Spicer/Getty Images

Steven Spielberg's new movie from Amblin and Universal is coming to theaters soon, but other than the release date (the movie's currently scheduled for May 15, 2026), we have, like, no information. If anyone was going to keep their scripts super top secret, it'd be Spielberg!

Thanks to The Hollywood Reporter, we do know the movie will have sci-fi themes, and the story is from David Koepp, who worked on Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Josh O'Connor and Emily Blunt join names like Colin Firth, Colman Domingo, and Eve Hewson. (Colin, is this why you aren't in Bridget Jones 4? 🤨).

This movie cast is absolutely stacked and I'm already thinking about how it will play out against Christopher Nolan's new movie, which stars Zendaya, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Anne Hathaway, and Matt Damon and comes out in July of the same year. Slays upon slays. After watching some of worst movies of 2024, I'm counting down the days until May 2026.

I'm super excited to see Spielberg come back to the land of summer movies after films like West Side Story and The Fabelmans both hit theaters in December of their respective years. In case you somehow haven't seen Steven Spielberg's movies, I can't pass up the opportunity to recommend The Goonies, E.T., and The Color Purple, in addition to those December flicks. And the fact all of these hits were done by the same guy? Almost too good to be true.

What was your reaction when Josh O'Connor and Emily Blunt joined Steven Spielberg's new movie? Let us know in the comments, then tell us how you reacted when you found out Anne Hathaway would star in Colleen Hoover's Verity. (I'll let you in on a secret: I screamed).

Scream 6 was one of the hottest movies of 2023, and we've been looking forward to Scream 7 since the credits started rolling! Even though we won't see Melissa Barrera return, I'm super excited to see Neve Campbell return as Sidney Prescott — and it looks like in addition to Friends star Courteney Cox stepping back into Gale Weathers' shoes, we'll also be seeing a beloved Yellowstone universe star taking on a brand new role.

Keep reading for the latest Scream 7 news — and everything you need to know about the cast.

Is Sidney going to be in Scream 7?

Brownie Harris/Paramount Pictures

Scream 7 Cast

Yes, Sidney Prescott will be in Scream 7! “Sidney Prescott is coming back!!!!” franchise lead Neve Campbell says on Instagram. “It’s always been such a blast and an honor to get to play Sidney in the ‘Scream’ movies. My appreciation for these films and for what they have meant to me, has never waned. I’m very happy and proud to say I’ve been asked, in the most respectful way, to bring Sidney back to the screen and I couldn’t be more thrilled.”

The actress was not involved in Scream 6 due to salary inequity. "As a woman I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to ‘Scream,'" she told Variety ahead of the sixth movie's release. "I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise."

Who else is in the cast of Scream 7?

Brownie Harris/Paramount Pictures

In addition to Neve Campbell, we'll see Isabel May (who you'll recognize from the Yellowstone prequels 1883 and 1923) appear as Neve's onscreen daughter. We could also see Courteney Cox reprise her role as Gale Weathers, via Variety.

However, we won't see onscreen sisters Melissa Barrera or Jenna Ortega in Scream 7. It was announced in November 2023 that Melissa would no longer star in the franchise following her posts on the Isreal-Hamas war, while Jenna's absence has been attributed to Wednesday season 2 scheduling conflicts.

When is Scream 7 coming out?

Philippe Bossé/Paramount Pictures

Scream 7 Release Date

Scream 7 will hit theaters on February 27, 2026. This is an unexpectedly perfect release date because nothing sends a shiver down my spine like winter (and Ghostface of course).

What is Scream 7 going to be about?

Brownie Harris/Paramount Pictures

Scream 7 Plot

We don't have an official plot for Scream 7 quite yet, but I'm feeling confident we'll see Sidney Prescott and (hopefully) Gale Weathers take down another Ghostface. Scream 6 co-writer Guy Busick has the sole writing credit on this new script, as well as Melissa Barrera's 2024 movieAbigail.

Is Scream 7 confirmed?

Brownie Harris/Paramount Pictures

Yes, Scream 7 is officially happening! After Scream 6 (which was released in March 2023) became the highest-grossing movie of the whole franchise, a sequel was announced in August of that year. Kevin Williamson, writer for the original 1996 Scream, will direct.
