What Is Functional Medicine?

First Look: Malla

Morris Esformes was inspired to create Malla after experiencing the power of functional medicine in his own life. Esformes dealt with intense anxiety, brain fog, and GI issues, and it wasn’t until he was functionally treated that his symptoms were at ease. His partner had the same success with functional medicine.

Though treatment was effective, Esformes saw an accessibility gap in the practice, and wanted to do something about it.

“A single consultation cost $800, and that was before lab tests, follow-up visits, supplements, and diet and lifestyle changes,” Esformes said. “That’s when I knew there had to be a better way. We shouldn’t have to deplete our savings to feel our best. And we shouldn’t be left in the dark when navigating our health.”

What is functional medicine?

In a nutshell, functional medicine looks at the whole you to treat the root cause of your symptoms. According to Malla Lead Functional Practitioner, Tanya Mezher (MS, RDN, CDN), functional medicine practitioners aim to get a picture of your health by looking at a range of factors, from genes, environment, and life events, to nutrition, lifestyle, stress, and social systems.

“Instead of simply treating symptoms, practitioners seek to address and identify underlying causes of conditions or disease,” Mezher said. “This approach recognizes that there can be many causes that contribute to a condition, and likewise, one cause that can contribute to many conditions.”

But, what's wrong with traditional medicine?

Traditional medicine often takes very few factors into consideration when treating patients, relies too heavily on pharmaceuticals, and isn’t realistically accessible for many. You’ve likely experienced a distant and dismissive doctor’s visit, like they just don’t get you – that’s just one pitfall of traditional medicine at work, according to Mezher and Esformes. Traditional medicine is also:

  • Saturated and short-staffed. It takes too long to get access to the care people are seeking and need.
  • Generally slow to evolve. Interventions and systems have stayed the same for decades, even as clinical research and technology advances.
  • Too focused on solving symptoms in the short-term. It does not optimally support the ailing individual in achieving and maintaining health and preventing disease in the long-term.
  • Not optimized to support practitioners. Most doctors that set out with all the highest intentions of healing and health end up burnt out and sick themselves. “Health is a deeply personal issue, and, because of the structure of our healthcare system, traditional medicine practitioners don’t get to take the time to really get to know their patients and support them emotionally,” Esformed said.
  • Limited in scope. Traditional treatment views and treats diseases in silos, when they’re often manifestations of the same underlying causes and imbalances in the body. It doesn’t focus enough on lifestyle factors, like nutrition, sleep, stress, and exercise. “Even with the most patient-centric approach, traditional medicine tends to take a tunnel vision approach to one’s ailments, often thanks to the systems in place,” says Mezher. “Conventional care also often relies on pharmaceutical or more invasive interventions first — rather than as an optional tool or final resort to healing.”

60% of adults suffer from a chronic condition and 40% suffer from at least two. Obesity rates are up from 13% to 42% between 1960 to 2020, and are expected to hit 50% by 2030. 20+ million adults struggle with major depressive disorders each year. Close to 1 in 3 kids have pre-diabetes, whereas, just 15 years ago, it was 1 in 11. And that's just a handful of the ailments many face in their day-to-day lives.

“We’ve never spent more on healthcare and yet are sicker than ever,” Esformes said. “Our reactive, symptom-suppressing, 'pill for every ill' approach to health isn’t working and needs to change. Functional medicine has the power to reverse the U.S.’s health epidemic, and we’re making that approach accessible.”

Though there’s a lot to be said for being pro-functional medicine, it’s not recommended that you abandon tradition altogether. Traditional medicine practitioners can still provide beneficial support for acute issues or even chronic concerns, while functional medicine takes a whole-body approach to your health.

“Our care at Malla can (and often should) be complementary to the care that is already being received conventionally or alternatively,” Mezher said. “Where individuals may decide to depart is when their quest to healing actually seems harmful, or where they may feel like they can’t seem to find the care and support they are seeking conventionally.”

“Functional medicine still believes in the use of prescription medication, when appropriate — just usually not as a first line of defense,” Esformes added.

Sarah took to Instagram again to celebrate their love with a throwback picture from their wedding day on Instagram and my jaw is still on the floor.

If you need more proof that the couple are still very much in love, here's a more recent pic that Sarah shared on Instagram from earlier in the year. She's "Still celebrating and spoiling" Freddie years later, and I think it goes without saying that he loves it there.

Sigh the bar has been set HIGH, and I can't wait to see how they continue to grow with time.

November 2024: Freddie Prinze, Jr. Reveals The One Celebrity Experience They're "Good At Avoiding"

Despite the fact that paparazzi love to see (and often follow) celebrity couples, Freddie just revealed how he and Sarah have been able to keep things low-key. When Oldish's podcast co-host Randy Spelling asked how they stay out of the public — and how intentional they have to be to keep a low profile — Freddie said it's "by choice," and that "you can control it to a certain degree."

"I don't know how deliberate [others] are in trying to avoid that BS," he said on the podcast. "I know how easy it's been for us because I don't go anywhere. I don't go to parties. People don't see Sarah and I out and about at the popular places. We have our restaurants that we like, and they're not super trendy in places where paparazzi hang out. So we're good at avoiding it."

Brie Larson takes wellness very seriously. And considering she's saved the universe as Captain Marvel and fought alongside King Kong in Kong: Skull Island, prioritizing her health only makes sense. I got up close and personal with the Oscar-winning actress at Thorne's Mocktail Club in New York City on October 8, where she told me that in the pursuit of wellness, she's "always" seeking to feel "happy and safe in my body."

But even Larson has days she feels off, saying she knows that feeling "very well," and whether it's seasonal blues or mental health days, she knows routine is where she thrives — and seasonal affective disorder lamps. "Light is a big game changer for me because I grew up in California," she says.

To engage her other senses, she relies on movement, breathing techniques, and temperature changes to keep in touch with her body. "A hot bath, a cold shower, both — anything that sort of wakes your brain up and kind of jolts it," she says. "I have a pretty demanding schedule and I truly don't have room to not feel like I'm present in my life. And so you come up with ways to figure out how to do that."

That includes everything from drinking plenty of water and prioritizing sleep to packing foam rollers and bands in her carry on. "It looks like a clown bag!" she says. "I always do [those exercises] every morning because even if I don't want to do it, which I always don't want to do it, I feel a lot better after I do it."

Admittedly, that's exactly how I feel some days about making breakfast — but a powerhouse like Larson knows how important fueling our bodies is. "Pretty consistently I'm having an egg, like a breakfast sandwich, egg on toast first thing in the morning," she says. "I can't think beyond that for breakfast because I wake up so early. It's like there's no creativity happening in the morning. I'm sorry. No."

And while her mornings are all about wellness, her evenings are all about getting cozy, and she tells me her dream night in includes playing a new video game, wearing Gelato Pique sweatpants, and ordering Thai food. But when she's in the kitchen? "I've been making pasta and sausage quite a bit and I make tacos quite a bit. I mean, I kind of just do like protein and veggies and a little bit of a carb," she says.

Cozy nights in wouldn't be the same without a movie, and there's a very good chance you've seen Larson on your screen recently, whether you're rewatching Captain Marvel, 13 Going on 30, or Lessons in Chemistry. But how does the actress consistently choose such beautiful, inspiring pieces to work on? She equates the feeling to having a crush.

"When I feel like [a story] hits something that lives so truthfully in me that I just want to know if it's true to other people," she says. "I just know that we all have more that's the same than different...Film and television, it lives in a way that is beyond me physically. So I'm here talking to you, but anybody can be watching whatever they want. And so I try my best to think through what the pieces are saying so that they go out in the world and I don't get to be at the end of it and explain it or tell people what to feel or what to take from it. It lives a life outside of me. So I try and make sure that it has a complete message in it that I feel like I'll be able to live with for the rest of my life."

Just like Carol Danvers and Elizabeth Zott empower so many viewers, Brie Larson says she feels empowered by her own Hollywood heroes. "Earlier in my career, like when I was trying to visualize what kind of career I wanted, it was Toni Colette and she's still a hero of mine, but she was truly the one that I was like, 'I want to disappear into characters the way she does.'"

"There's so many incredible [actors]," she continues. "Some of them are people that are more my age and some are older than me. But that's the fun part of my job is that there's so many good people and so many things that are getting made. And so it just feels like we're constantly kind of maneuvering, and when they take on certain roles and represent certain things, it frees up for other people to do other things. And so we kind of all work as a unit."

One movie on the horizon that I'm excited for is Mattel's new American Girl movie. Like many 80s and 90s kids, Brie Larson loved American Girl dolls — and borrowed her stage name from pioneer Kirsten Larson! What's the first thing you did after you won your Oscar?

I probably drank champagne...I drank champagne and I put sneakers on, and then I went to the airport.

What's the best piece of advice you've received?

"When I think I know, I miss so much." We all get stuck in these things — I think an easy one to think about is like, you're in a fight with your sibling or your partner, and you are just so right in how angry you are. And then maybe the next day you wake up and you're like, "Maybe there was another side to that." And so we miss things when we're in a space where we believe that we know. Having an openness to what something can be or that things can be different than what you think makes things easier.

What's on your holiday bucket list?

I love the holidays. Because I'm in California, I really am looking forward to this year having a chilly winter. I love a cold winter, cozy winter. I love Christmas markets, so I'll definitely hit things like that. All the little holiday markets pop up around, yeah, it's just like a rare time when everybody is resting at the same time.

What are you watching, reading and listening to right now?

Okay. I am reading a book called Patricia Wants To Cuddle. I am watching Love is Blind season 7 because I am not silly. And listening to Chappell Roan, obviously.

Following our beloved Gilmore Girls and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Dan and Amy Sherman-Palladino's next series is Étoile, which is set at two world-famous ballet companies in New York City and Paris. When both companies run into some trouble, the decide to swap their most talented stars in a last-ditch effort to save themselves.

And based on the first set leaks from New York City, it looks like Étoile will definitely be packing on the drama. This short clip shows Luke Kirby standing outside Lincoln Center in a serious conversation (probably about the fate of his ballet company, TBH).

"Well, guess that plan for early retirement will have to wait," Dan and Amy said in a joint statement (via The Hollywood Reporter). "Instead, we’ve decided to embark on an international journey with an unbelievable group of players and the most talented ballet dancers in the world. We will sleep when we’re dead."

But this isn't the first time ASP has forayed into the world of ballet! Her ABC Family series Bunheads (which premiered on June 11, 2012) follows Michelle (Sutton Foster) who moves to her hometown of Paradise and starts working at her mother-in-law's dance studio The Paradise Dance Academy. The best part is that the role of Michelle's mother-in-law is played by Emily Gilmore herself, Kelly Bishop!

When does Étoile premiere?

We don't have an official release date yet, but considering THR recently revealed the show will finish filming soon, we're hoping to see Étoile in 2025. Just like Gilmore Girls is the ultimate fall rewatch, maybe Étoile will be the ultimate winter rewatch!

So far, we know that Étoile will star Luke Kirby, Gideon Glick, Camille Cottin, Simon Callow, Lou de Laâge, and David Alvarez. Yanic Truesdale, who played our favorite Gilmore Girls concierge Michel, has also joined the series as a recurring character! I'm so excited to see Yanic working with Amy Sherman-Palladino again — it's like a Gilmore Girls reunion!

What does Étoile mean?

Étoile translates to "star," and there are so many different connections here! We have the ballet stars themselves, but you also wish upon a star and reach for the stars when you're working towards a dream. If you ask me, Étoile is the perfect name for this series.

How many episodes does Étoile have?

The first season of Étoile will have eight episodes total, but considering Prime Video ordered two seasons, we'll definitely be getting more episodes.

We're especially sad to see the Toasted White Chocolate Mocha not included, though the official menu lineup has yet to be released!

When is Starbucks Red Cup Day 2024?

Though there's no official word out about Red Cup Day for 2024, our best guess – based on the Red Cup Days of years past – is it'll return mid-November. In 2023, Red Cup Day fell on November 16. In 2022, the coffee chain held the event on November 17. Both dates landed on the third Thursday of November, so we predict it to hit on November 21 for 2024. Red Cup Day is when Starbucks customers can get a free reusable red cup when they order a seasonal drink off the holiday menu.
